Were it not for the connectors on its back, any (micro)ATX would. The mounting looks the same.

Just my 2ct´s as an Maxsun board owner. If this Board ist somewhat like my B550 Board. I can say, that those boards work and are very stable. But the Bios is not well rounded and new bios versions are not on the same timeline as Asus/MSI etc...

M-ATX boards fit M-ATX cases too (surprise), which kind of defeats the purpose here.

The downside of doing that is that you end up needing redrivers for the PCIe signals, since the connector between the two boards will reduce the signal quality.
M.2 isn't a great desktop form factor though, at least not the way it's being implemented. It should really hang "off" the motherboard and the screw mounts should be part of the housing. It should allow for better cooling as well.

It actually looks like a fusion between a mini-ITX and a DTX form factor, where mini-DTX was mini-ITX with an extra slot and DTX being full depth ATX in size.
Sadly AMD didn't push the DTX form factor at all, so it had a very short lifespan.

That said, this is clearly copying what the Taiwanese board makers have been working on for a while now, where most of the connectors are on the rear of the PCB, making it incompatible with any and all cases in the market today.

What's the point of putting some of the fan headers on the rear of the motherboard though? That just makes it harder to use them.

I guess the point is that nothing stands in the way of the m.2 screws, so swapping drives is as trouble-free as possible.

There are pros and cons to that type of layout.

The first -- and probably the most important to the manufacturer -- is additional cost. The m.2 connectors here are commodity parts in a very simple configuration. There's clearly a single integrated heatsink for both as well for a low profile installation.

Vertically mounted m.2 drives would be much more of a pain to secure. Those little screws are already an annoyance as it is on a level surface (and yes, I use a screwdriver with a magnetic tip). Easier to do when the motherboard is out on the bench. It would be a royal pain once the motherboard is mounted in a case with a bunch of cables, hoses, etc. all over the place, especially if the case isn't much larger than the mobo itself.

And there might not be any space gain advantage with a vertically mounted m.2 drives since the manufacturer would need to leave some clearance for larger m.2 heatsinks like Sabrent's beefy model.

Naturally the user would need to provide their own m.2 heatsinks for their two drives.

I don't see the widespread appeal for vertically mounted m.2 drives which is why they probably haven't been included on consumer-grade motherboards. Neither does anyone else but a handful of geeks. It's not like m.2 drives are a newly introduced component.

Joe Consumer is clearly more interested in addressable RGB headers.

Now only if PCIe video cards were more of a thing and SLI/Crossfire wasn't dead this would be awesome SFF build potential. Imagine if you will two rx 6400 on NVMe in SLI. (I'm day dreaming of course )

The price is not the point. The point is that it includes this functionality, which directly refutes the claim "they probably haven't been included on consumer-grade motherboards".

And ASUS' implementation isn't rocket surgery anyway, it's literally a differently-keyed PCIe x8 slot with a double-sided PCIe card. Essentially two of these duct-taped together to accomplish the low Z-height.

Again you repeatedly fail to understand that manufacturers will make what's commercially viable, not what's "best" or "perfect".

I knew that such devices existed, they just aren't being gobbled up by Joe Consumer. You are living in a fantasyland dreamworld filled with products that may actually be sitting on some prototype lab bench somewhere in Taiwan but will never see the light of day on Microcenter's shelves. Well, not at a price point that Joe Consumer will find palatable.

I'm sure those PCI m.2 riser cards are flying off of store shelves which is why PC hardware forums are full of threads filled by posts from people clamoring for sure wondrous devices.
