Is a Seasonic Focus GX 850W good enough for my system?

I'm running a Ryzen 9 3900X (per CCD manual OC to 4.35/4.2 @ 1.25V - draws about 120w on full load), RTX 2070 (also OCd to +165 core +1050 memory, power limit max - draws about 214W on full load), ROG Strix B550-F.

I want to replace my current CX 650 with a Seasonic Focus GX 850W (not the Focus Plus variant) to hopefully fix the idle reboots I have on this PSU with C-states enabled, and to have more headroom for new GPUs.

Is this unit good enough? Any recommendations?

Why 850w? You'd be fine with a 650w unit. If you want .keep headroom and room for expansion, id go 750w.

Seasonic is quality, but drop down in the wattage. :)

The price difference here between 750W and 850W versions of the same unit is negligible and that's why
its still money you don't need to spend ..even if it is only $10. ;)

Your system draw is LESS than half the output of the 75pw unit. Save yourself however much the difference is, IMO. To give you an idea... I run a i9-10980XE@ 4.5 ghz all c/t and an rtx 3080 (strix) on a 750w unit (evga g3). No issues with fan noise or anything. You draw ~200W less than me urrently. ;)

You positive 750W is enough? Even for an OCd 3080 for example?

my cpu uses a lot more power than yours ;). Add 150W-175W to your total for an oc'd 3080 instead of a 2070.

You can't go wrong with either... but 750W saves you a few quid. :)

Yes, your 750 Watts has a lotta headroom even if you OC'd your CPU, RAM, GPU & cats/dogs. :rockout:

750W is "more" than enough. See for yourself here. That's with your current RTX 2070. Swap in the 3080 and 750W still gives you lots of wiggle room.

Note that all PSU calculators pad the results because the last thing they want to do is recommend an underpowered supply. And while the OuterVision is, by far, the most flexible and accurate, I even padded the results a little further by bumping up CPU Utilization to 100%, adding a Blu-Ray drive, and compensating for aging by increasing Computer Utilization Time.

By the way, do you reckon the reason why my PC hard reboots during idle with C-states enabled, is my PSU? I think it can't handle the extremely low power state of my CPU.

If I replace it with a higher quality unit like the Focus GX 850 or PX 750, would it still happen?

That actually makes no sense at all. That would suggest your PSU could not support a tiny Ryzen 3 or i3 and that's just not true.

It is true that many PSUs struggle with stability with "zero" load. But that NEVER happens in a PC. Even if your CPU is doing absolutely nothing, the motherboard itself, the chipset, RAM, drives, fans, NIC, and I/O devices are all placing a load on the supply.

Doubtful.
+1, it doesn't have the "feel" of a PSU especially if your re-boots are only during the PC's idle stage and at no other time (like gaming)

What exactly do you mean by idle reboots? As in the PC would randomly black screen and reboot itself while doing nothing with no sound or anything?

Then why does it even happen

I specifically killed most processes, enabled C-states, and watched Ryzen Master. All cores sleeping, and a few minutes latter it hard shuts down and starts up again.

If it's not my PSU then what is it? It did this on my Gigabyte B550 board too. I changed RAM modules, the only thing that wasn't changed was the CPU.

It doesn't happen with C-states disabled.

Typical Current Idle does nothing.

We don't have enough information. Could be your graphics, a connected device, you facility power. If it is your PSU, it is because there is a fault in it, not because of design or its size.

I have another CX 650 in another system and it does the same thing. I used that PSU for test bench this system. Both PSUs are relatively new. Mine is almost a year old, the other one is 3 months old, bought brand new.

My GPU is fine and has no reason to be the cause of reboots like that on idle.

The only connected things to my PC are my keyboard, mouse and headphones.

If it was an issue with the power in my house, then it's one hell of a specific issue to only cause this at idle and not during an extreme overnight stress test when everything's fine

I am 100% certain it's this model of PSU not liking the way Ryzen uses extremely little power compared to my Intel CPU on idle. Even that CPU didn't downclock and undervolt THAT much. Either that, or somehow I got two defective samples!

It's not a bad unit, but 150 gets you more Seasonic. It's a base unit, you can get one of those neat Asus ROG units with the software for around 150-200 if you want to overkill the heck out of it.

Better yet, knock it down to 750 and pick up a Phanteks or something, which is also a Focus unit for like 100.

And how do you know that? If you have not swapped in another graphics card to see if the problem goes away or continues, then you have not eliminated that from the equation.

Probably because I had an Intel board and CPU before that, used it for a year or so, GPU was perfectly fine even when on idle doing absolutely nothing with little to no extra processes running.

And yes, I did swap it out for a GTX 1060 I had laying around, same thing. GPU is out of the question.

This problem is specifically on Ryzen. And I doubt it's the CPU itself.

both PSU are having the same issue? It may be more of a mobo issue. You basically need to test each component individually.
