I dislike the microsoft browser and only have it in case a site doesn't work with firefox. I would strongly recommend firefox as an alternative to edge. Firefox is constantly being updated with security features etc. and is one of the safest browsers because of this.

Who gives a shit? Even when I wasn't using Edge it didn't take me long to dismiss those notifications and use Firefox. I switched to it by my own accord, after 12 years of using Firefox, and I'm now using it full time because it's a legitimately good browser unlike IE.

Mozilla's contract with Google is about to end and they're about to go down the deep end - they already did when they unsupported Compact mode. Why the hell unsupport compact mode just to give me twinkie sized tabs?

You people like to attribute "FORCING DOWN OUR THROATS" with everything MS does. It's no wonder I stopped visiting tech forums. Eugh. Just unending headaches, reminding me of those Loonix elitists.

I have yet to have anything "forced down my throat" by Microsoft, as in, forcing me to use it, not letting me use any alternatives. But that has never happened.

Same thing happens with other programs too - like .pdf readers.

I agree with the others that Edge has evolved into a great browser. The biggest problem Edge has is the Microsoft brand name on it. Many folks are highly biased against anything Microsoft, and readily bash it any chance they get - regardless if applicable to the topic, or if the program is good or not. We see evidence of this all the on this site, even in this thread. It is sad some cannot have an open mind.

Others are just fanboys for their own favorites - and that's fine! But only if they look at things objectively. Sadly, many don't and instead they summarily reject (often with falsehoods) anything that is not their own personal favorite. Also sad.

No browser is perfect. Nor is any one browser the best at everything. Fortunately, all of the most popular browsers are good at what they do - including doing it securely.

So pick the one that looks and feels comfortable to you. Then grow up and accept the fact that some people prefer green over purple. That does not mean purple is no good.

When Windows boots up, a popup comes up asking the user to make Edge the default browser. Chrome never does that.
Windows is Windows and Edge is Edge. So what if Microsoft makes both?

I think we understanding what you are saying. I think the problem is, you don't understand how it normally works.

You say Chrome never does. Ummm, yes it does - IF Chrome is not your default. In fact, most, if not all browsers will prompt to make them the default, IF not already.

And yes, Windows is Windows and Edge is Edge, but Windows relies greatly on Internet access. And Edge is built into Windows. So Windows does, by default, use (and need) Edge.

Now I will grant you that if you set an alternative browser as your default, Windows should not keep hounding you to change it back to Edge. But if Windows has a major update (and that happens) those default settings may get overwritten by an updated setting or file and go back to the original defaults. That may be a bit of an annoyance, but I don't see it that big a deal - especially in light of the fact keeping our operating systems current is a major tenet of proper security measures. Sadly, thanks to the bad guys, we all must make some sacrifices in the interest of staying safe.

meh. i choose to ignore it. use to rage about MS/browser w/win95/98 and IE4. lets not forget all the hoopla of MS doing their best to block other browsers had to make a special edition of win7(?) just for europe. since then i just do my best to bury it (IE/edge), go to file associations and replace everything w/FF or chrome, yadda yadda yadda.

maybe that's why when MS surprised me earlier today w/an update i just got a "got it" or "settings" pop up but nothing about default browser. seems maybe you tried to delete it before, then, as a first run, i can see the difference.

It is annoying how Windows does try to ram Edge down your throat, especially the farcical procedure for changing the default browser in Windows 11. But that's usually a one-time hassle if I'm not mistaken.
On the other hand, I use them all - Opera, Chrome, Edge and occasionally Firefox, but my preferred one is Opera for the simple reasons that the quick dials are so versatile, it has Whatsapp built-in and a few other features that I like.
They're all simple tools at the end of the day, but if something annoys me, I avoid it.

Used and tried most of the browsers available, Firefox is the best overall for my needs but also i'm guilty of what @Bill_Bright says.
I'm so disgusted with M$ that i tend to tear them a new one regardless; not in this case tho.

Turn off the setting in edge, check the task scheduler, services.msc and ms config.
