This hard drive is a pretty old model I've had it for about 10 years now it's a 1TB hard drive always working in perfect condition, in fact i used it in December to give a game to my friend, and it worked perfectly fine. however today i just found it again and when i plugged it into the outlet the light came on and i heard it booting up, but when i plugged in the USB my computer didn't make the notification noise and the hard drives light turned off. i have tried numerous different ports, computers, and plugs but nothing is working. it makes the normal humming noise and warms up when i plug it in, but no light indicator and no USB plugin is working. I don't care if i keep the information on it i just don't really feel like spending money on it to get it repaired.

Hard to say if it's the actual HDD or the USB controller in the casing. You could try removing the HDD from the case and hook it up to your computer to find out.

You can try installing an OS (Try linux or ubuntu version). Set your HDD as bootable device and try to install the OS. IF this because of some errors in the memory management, that can repair through this method.

You wouldn't repair it. You would throw it away. Break it open and test the drive then. Its may just be the connections. You can buy a new housing for $10

I fail to see how that would do anything at all.

If he could access the drive he wouldn't be asking for help! must be more of TOMSHARDWARE.COM sneaking in the back door, I saw they bought out Anandtech.com used to love that site now it's like total chaos I try not to visit it any more.

I mean, connect the external HDD through SATA cable and try to install the OS. If the problem is something related to memory crash, this method can help
