Hi!

I have a new~er system (newer to me as i love older machines.) that i'm currently using which is this:

Dell Precision 3240 Compact i7-10700 32GB RAM Desktop

DELL Power Supply 330W AC Adapter

ZOTAC GeForce RTX 3050 Low Profile 6G NVIDIA 6 GB GDDR6

32 GB RAM TOO!

2TB 2.5 SSD

2TB NVME M.2 AND ANOTHER 2TB NVME M.2

but instead of using the RTX 3050 Low Profile 6G i want to use the RTX 4060 from my other computer since i love this system so much and currently the fastest system i have on hand.
problem is, the 4060 i have requires an 8-pin power connector but i know what you may thinking.

"Just get a low profile 4060"

Not gunna happen because i cannot afford another and since i have one available why buy another one?

I do not make a lot of money after groceries the home i live in and utilities but with that said i have many many MANY computer components to work with from over the years.. lol

SO, with all this being said:
and i know this is a long shot, but is there a way i can take a low wattage power supply and hook up ONLY the PCIE connection and make the 4060 work?

I have never done this before and i wanted to ask before doing it so i don't blow up my machine lol...well that wouldn't be too funny to me heh ;)

ANY help is very much appreciated!!!!!!

It should work, I can't see any reason not to. You need to short the sense pins on your 24-pin PSU output, to trick the PSU into thinking it's connected to a powered on motherboard. If you don't mind the extra cable and PSU clutter, and making sure it's secured from any other factors like cats, if it's an open bench scenario.

just off the top of your head is there any other "safer method"?
So if i were to just use the 8 pin it would not turn on or work? or fry?
All of my wires on the power supply are black lol (come to think of it ALL of my PSU are all black wires!)

I agree with this idea and to make this work, you need to power your "GPU" PSU up first, and only then, when your GPU is launched, you ignite the rest of the system. When shutting down, you do it in the opposite order: shut the main power down first and then the auxiliary PSU goes off. If you don't trust yourself with that you can keep the GPU PSU always running. Gonna cost you some quid in electricity bills but it's not really unsafe.

Good luck with the janky hack, it's ugly but it works well.

If you are feeling adventurous you could list your Dell on ebay and wait. Those SFFs seem to hold their value reasonably well, so If someone bites and offers a reasonable amount ($500?) you could use that to fund a regular ATX or mATX system that doesn't have the cooling/power/BIOS limitations of those Dell SFF systems.

I see used Ryzen 7 5800X systems going for about the same money and if you have spare time but not much money then trading up via ebay is a good way to maximise what you can get for your budget.

I really REALLY appreciate everyone's help here on the forum!
From 2+ decades experience with Dell/HP prebuilts my advice (and I'm sure other veterans here will concur) is to avoid trying to upgrade those prebuilts - use it as it is, or swap it for something that uses standard parts.

They have a lot of proprietary parts, the SFFs like you have are some of the worst for non-standard layouts, wiring, and connectivity. Stuff that you think will be easy often isn't - you end up needing to re-pin cables, Dremel away some metal to make things fit, use adhesive or cable ties because screw holes don't line up.

These office SFF systems aren't really meant to be upgraded at all, so while it's certainly possible, it's not necessarily economical. The minute you start hacking away to make an upgrade fit your resale value vanishes without a trace.

I saw his intentions to be more of an enthusiast kind, and that's the only reason I jumped in to try providing help. Otherwise I really wouldn't care a single bit. Too many people nowadays comes to TPU forum and behave like it's an AI chat box, and all of us as some kind of a differently trained LLMs.

Might as well post some nice pics when you're done! Just to prove you're not an LLM, and we the commenters then have to prove (by using not-censored-enough language) that *we* ain't an LLM. Cap-tcha!

Much easier to get this instead, then you don't have to mess around with shorting anything manually because both PSUs come on at the same time.
