Legit though, why did the 9700X release with such a low TDP/default wattage?

I've been in discussion about this with a couple friends. We're not necessarily complaining as we loved the 7000 non-x CPUs but it's interesting they didn't do the same thing they did with 7000 in terms of PBO/Eco mode. Moreover, given how cool these CPUs run stock, I'm shocked there wasn't an option to get them with a stock cooler given how well the Wraith Prism cooled the 7700 and 7900.

The conspiracy theorist in me says that they released the X chips early with the default lower power so they can later release some kind of Ryzen Desktop AI thing with a higher power envelope along with an NPU and claim a performance increase over the X to make them look better. The logical side of me can't come up with a good reason to justify that and torpedo any possible sales of the X chips and the entire launch would make them look bad.

I'd love to hear other theories, be it conspiratorial or serious.

Maybe they looked at Intel recently and decided it's best not to fly so close to the sun.

Amd's two most popular cpu's are the 7800X3D/5800X3D they probably felt people like them because of the low watt usage..... What they forgot is for their time they also provided class leading performance at what they were intended for .

Sure PBO can help a bit with MT performance but wattage goes insane. I think AMD knows and I kinda agree efficiency is all these chips got going for them. Those who don't care can buy expensive cooling and run this chip at 150w+ although i think that's a pretty small market most will probably grab a 9950X instead that reside in that camp.

Per Gamers Nexus, they changed the location and logic behind the internal thermal sensor, making TDP comparisons more complicated than it might appear.

Definitely better to let users fry their chips than do it out of the box lol.

Yup, saw that, though still they're not even close to throttling and a couple review sites tested them with air coolers and found them to be relatively similar to the last gen non-x parts so I'd assume the headroom is mostly similar

A quick bump in power limits and curve optimizer/curve shaper tuning will wake these up. All AMD parts are pretty boring @ stock imo.

This is the most boring stock new part they've made in a half decade though...... To the point I would have been more excited for price cuts to 7000 series if this is what we are getting.....

The 5800XT and 5900XT are def more boring lol but they are technically not new....

Since you put it like that.. :D

I literally just watched the video during my shower. Bummer dude.

I wonder if they are saving the big clocks for the big CPUs?

If AMD can't beat Intel in raw performance, might as well do it with wattage. A lot of people are sick of needing high end cooling. 65watt is perfect for gaming :).

Kinda bad that AMS can't be bothered to include a Wraith Cooler, yet charges $100 more for basically a 7700X with lower wattage.

These are def aimed at server where 16 CCD at much lower power will be impressive....

They just shoveled the left overs down to us diy users....

88w* because AMD is weird about TDP. Also that's basically what the non-x processors were which is why it's baffling they didn't do it with the 9000 series if they aren't planning on releasing non-x parts

Yeah, it makes 3D look better, and they're bringing overclocking back.

I'm not sure AMD needs more reasons than that.
The conspiracy theorist in me says that they released the X chips early with the default lower power so they can later release some kind of Ryzen Desktop AI thing with a higher power envelope along with an NPU and claim a performance increase over the X to make them look better.
I'm sorry to hear that, but Ryzen AI doesn't make sense in desktops where graphics cards are a thing. If you can't afford that you can always go for a Hawk Point APU.
