Hi y’all, I’m new here. I was fluent in computers well over a decade ago but fell out of practice with college and whatnot. I just picked up a 2010 Mac Pro for audio production, it has a Sapphire PULSE RX 580 installed, and it’s been freezing and rebooting on me. However the conditions are weird: it runs heavy workloads and gaming just fine, but after going back to casual use it’ll reboot. It ONLY does this following heavy workloads. It mostly happens when using Safari web browser, but has happened once in Firefox and a couple times in the App Store. My Windows 10 Bootcamp gaming installation runs almost entirely flawless—it has frozen on me just once.
Also it has only once generated a system crash log. All other times the crashes happen without any record in the console.
I suspected power issues, but a different power supply and wiring the GPU 8-pin directly into the PSU didn’t change anything. Given that the problems happen almost entirely in macOS (even with a fresh install on a different drive) I’m inclined to believe my RAM and storage isn‘t the issue either. Stress tests pass with flying colors and normal operating temperatures all around.
My uncle has built a buttload of computers over the years and said that almost every single one of his gremlins came from a GPU problem. So I’m diving down the rabbit hole of GPU BIOS and flashing and whatnot. This is all new to be, but I‘m learning. A helpful MacRumors forum member had me dump my BIOS and took a look inside. He says the UEFI is missing (?) and it doesn’t appear to match any official TPU dumps. I’d like to factory-reset my card as part of troubleshooting, If someone can look deeper into this with me, I’d much appreciate it.
Here are all the stickers on my card:
I discovered last night that my card has a dual BIOS switch. It’s been set to the right this whole time. I’ve gotten info with it both right and left. I haven’t done extensive testing yet with it in the left position, but will shortly.
Here are GPU-Z screenshots and hash numbers of my BIOS with the switch set to the right:
UEFI box is unchecked.
Here’s the same info for the switch in the left position:
UEFI seems to exist here.
So my goal is to flash the BIOS for the switch-right setting to factory and leave the switch-left as a fallback. I just need help knowing where to go next. Is my BIOS actually messed up or am I misreading all this? I have BIOS dumps for both switch positions attached in a zip file to this post, if somebody wants to look inside them and see what my eyes cannot.
Most importantly, where can I get a factory ROM file for this card? Using ATIWinFlash seems easy enough. Barring some random error I think I can push all the right buttons.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post. I want to make sure all the details are here.
