Hey guys

Got a call to fix a mac that won't turn on, you hit the power button and nothing happens so I switched out the psu (this is a G5) plugged it back in and it still didn't turn on. Come to find out the monitor doesn't even turn on either. Every things plugged in and tried different wall outlets. I am lost here, when the tower didn't turn on my first thought was the logic board but if the monitor doesn't turn on; is it that maybe there was a power surge and it friend the computer and the monitor?

Any ideas how to fix this mac?

While I love the ol G5 there is a few issues that are going to make this hard. For one, the power supply is not standard ATX so swapping one will require purchasing one or having a known working spare. Second, the PMU is a failure point on it own. There are instructions around on how to reset that and the pram. but my quick search was bringing up dead links.

There are some basic diagnostics to try, but again, that will likely require spending money. However, if the monitor is dead as well, that leads to a power spike running through their mains frying stuff as that should be independent of the tower unless it was one of those using the apple display connector ( i don't think any of the g5's did)

Outside of that, I really don't know how to help. I wish you the best of luck, but sadly, there aren't many working G5's around though I hope yours is one for a bit longer.

Edit: weblink for detailed troubleshooting steps (ifixit)

Tons of G5's on ebay for cheap(ish). You are gonna need a parts donor.

Should be able to use most any monitor with DVI for testing.

There are those that would tell a customer that it is too old to fool with. A data transplant to something newer isn't going to be that much more effort than trying to get this one back up and running.
