I always liked the microchip approach to programming micro-controllers, making their tools rather accessible through affordable pricing. I'm contemplating getting back into µC programming, and the cost factor for all the tools you need (oscilloscope, power supply, good soldering equipment, programming tools/debuggers ...) is not insignificant. At least for a hobby application.
