Against everyones expectancies Microsoft released a beta version of their WinFS filesystem to Microsoft Developer Network service.
WinFS was supposed to be one of Windows Vista's main features though MS decided it could not be added in time, WinFS would be released several months after Vista. This will probably still be the case.
The current beta runs under all versions of Windows XP though has only been tested under home and professional. It is unknown if the final version will still support Windows XP.
The main reason to use WinFS would be the ability to search a harddrive more efficiently, personally I'm not sure if that's worth the trouble.
