Hello I'm building a PC. Upon boot, I'm getting a red light on the CPU and an orange light on the VRAM for literally a millisecond. I have power to the motherboard and CPU via my power supply.

  • Motherboard: MSI PRO B650-s
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7700
  • RAM: Crucial Pro DDR5
  • GPU: GTX 960 (not the final card, waiting on the new Intel Arc card)
Please see the link below. I would greatly appreciate any help.

FYI I have switched the DIM to slot 2 and 4 - I've tried different DIMS too.

Why on Earth are you trying to start your computer without any sort of cooler on the CPU? Are you trying to fry your CPU?

HOPEFULLY, your board is smart enough to detect no CPU fan connected and is protecting you from yourself!

means the CPU fan is not plugged in

1. why would you ever start a PC with no HSF on the CPU other than to see if you can fry some silicone?
2. assuming the CPU is ok it could be a bent pin, CPU is not seated properly, and/or mobo needs a BIOS update

thanks on point 2.

the motherboard has no bent pins and the cpu just slips in and have checked it is seated properly. I will look into the BIOS update.

Or there is an extra standoff under the motherboard. If you properly mount the CPU cooler (which includes a proper application of thermal interface material), triple check to make sure all the power cables go where they belong and are securely fastened, I would pull everything out of the case and assemble it on a plain cutting/bread board and see if the problem persists. Then while out, make sure you inserted a standoff only where the is a corresponding motherboard mounting hole.

The CPU had the issue it was not being ack'd by the motherboard - I tried another CPU and it had worked.

So did you try the other 1 more time and ensure it was installed correctly
