I just upgraded to 32GB. The kit I bought is same as the kit I am replacing, except for the size. Even the memory chips appear to be the same. I don't need the extra RAM, but if I use both kits together without any disadvantages, then I will. The only reason I haven't tried this myself is my current CPU cooler blocks on the RAM slots, so using both kits together means getting a new cooler. Anyone tried this?

***UPDATE2: I went ahead and installed both kits side by side. I have added Thaiphoon Burner screenshots of each kit. They are identical apart from the size, and worked great for the most part. They even operated in dual channel mode when installed together. However, there was [at least] one issue: Flight Simulator 2020 would randomly and inevitably crash. Sometimes it would crash during loading the level (the world). More often, it would crash shortly after loading, while setting up the plane for a flight. I will note these crashes happened with XMP profiles enabled and with the DDR speed at the rated 3600Mhz for each kit. The XMP profiles settings were also the same between the kits. I also tried playing Destiny 2, which seemed stable. I am keeping the kits installed together. I lowered the speed to 3533 and they are playing nicely together now. I think I ran into issues at 3600Mhz, because neither of these are on the Memory QVL for my board. I did a quick CPUz bench, and the scores for the CPU are within a few points of my previous config (16GB or 32GB kit only). I think I'll keep this setup until the socket change next gen.

Just wanted to update this in case someone has a similar idea. I was unable to find a post with this precise question, so I hope this at least helps someone else down the road.

TLDR: I got the 2 kits to work together, but had use a slightly lower speed to make it work.

Try downloading Thaiphoon burner, it will tell you if you have the same memory ICs.
Difference size should be fine, since it's two kits on separate channels.
At that speed it should also not be an issue, even if it's not exactly the same memory ICs.
