Looking for a solid motherboard for AMD Ryzen 9 7900X?

Needs, 2-3 M2 slots, PCI5(pci4 would work too) amd 4 sata RAID10(for 4 3.5 HDD's), under $500-/+

I dont upgrade too often, could I get away with just PCI4? Im guessing yes.

Your budget allows for pretty much any AM5 motherboard. Is that for the ram as well?

How about the GIGABYTE X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7?
  • <$300
  • mentions RAID10 for sata drives
  • 4 M.2 slots (3 gen5, 1 gen4)
  • 4 sata connectors
  • WiFi 7 and BT 5.4
  • has bios flash button
  • has debug display

Remember, RAID does not protect your data from potential data loss, due to file corruption, ransomware attack, accidental file deletion, or multiple drive failure. Instead (apart from simple RAID0), a Redundant Array of Independant Drives allows you to replace drive(s) and restore normal operation, nothing more. The important word here is Redundant. RAID is not a backup solution on its own.

You need to keep at least two more copies of important files on different devices or media, e.g. portable drives, USB memory, other hard disks (not part of your RAID10). To guard against ransomware, at least one of these backups should not remain connected to the main machine all the time. Ideally one backup will be placed off-site, to guard against flood, fire, burglary.

The other point is that if you use the (hardware?) RAID solution built into a computer motherboard and that motherboard dies, you may have to source another similar/identical motherboard to access the RAID again.

I prefer software solutions such as TrueNAS Core, where you can move the entire disk array from one computer to another, without worrying too much about the hardware. I run RAID-Z2, which means I can lose up to two drives and (in theory) no data will be lost before I replace the failed drive(s). In practice, I could lose a third drive during resilvering and bang goes my data, if I don't have backups. TrueNAS is not a solution if you only have one computer.

I built a system for someone with an MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk board (not sure if it had WiFi) and a 5600X. It works fine.

PCI5(pci4 would work too)
Not sure if you need PCI Gen.5 for M.2 NVMe (or a faster GPU if/when they come out) but I doubt you'd see much difference in Gen.5, apart from benchmarking apps. Some programs will run faster with double the bandwidth, but you normally pay extra for that additional speed and the money might be better spent elsewhere.

You could look at the Asus X670E E Strix or MSI X670E Carbon. Both of those boards have their benefits when it comes to PCIe and are in your price range. As an example the Strix board can support 4 5.0 NVME drives if you use the 2nd PCIe slot. The Carbon supports RAID 0 with 2 5.0 M2 on the slot itself. You can use an adapter for that, like that new one from Highpoint. Both will give you flexibility to buy more of whatever you want. I bought 2 4tb drives from Newegg (One was for the Ally) and decided to put them in my main rig. Now I have 8TB of budget NVME that sucks at writes but gives me up to 12 GB/s reads. That is great for Gaming at 4K high where speed matters.
