I have an asus prime z370-a rev 1.04

it has 2 m.2 sockets, but I cannot find any information on what generation (do they call them generations?) m.2 it supports.

can this mobo handle m.2 gen 4?

anyone can please tell?

There is no platform support for PCIe 4.0 on Intel prior to Z490, and even then only with 11th gen CPUs.

The Z370-A has at least one 3.0 x4 slot, the other slot is also x4 but not sure if 2.0 or 3.0. Shouldn't matter much in practice. Also, one of the them takes SATA M.2 as well but not sure which.

I gotta take a picture and upload it.
it's weird, idk why the specs of "my" mobo don't match the z370-a 1 or 2 or whatever. maybe I'm wrong idk.

Asus can be a bit confusing, their listed specs for the Z370-A are not helpful.

Regardless, you will not find PCIe 4.0 anywhere on 8th and 9th Intel.

PCIe 3.0 x4. It is also compatible with SSD PCIe 4 x4, but it works at the speed of the port.
You must consult the manual (if it is not marked directly on the motherboard) which slot supports M.2 SATA and which SATA slots are disabled when it is used in SATA mode.

On Asus Prime Z370-A Rev 1.04
The port next to the processor disables SATA 5 and 6. It only supports M.2 PCIe.
The port next to the chipset disables SATA 1 only used in M.2 SATA mode. Supports M.2 PCIe and M.2 SATA.

No port is directly connected to the processor. If you want to install a single PCIe SSD, use the one next to the chipset.

My motherboard is rated at 4xdimm 64gb max
can it handle 2x32gb sticks?

or does it mean like 4x16?

Im gonna be buying another 1tb crucial p3, theyre so cheap!!! (compared to ssds which is weird)

thank you everyone for your support.

one last question, do i want to use m.2 sata or m.2 pcie setup for my 2nd m.2?

4xdimm sockets 64gb max

my question is, 64gb using all 4 slots?
what if i have 1 64 gb stick?
or in the case of what i was asking, can i use 2x32gb sticks

sorry if this is a dumb question, im just trying to get help

i checked that already. problem is, it doesnt list any memory from the brand OLOY

idk if oloy isnt on that list because its not a big brand name, or if its because its not compatible. but i guess, in the "better safe than sorry" pov, i will be skipping the oloy memory for something that is on that list. thank you

Never heard of oloy, probably too small of a brand to be tested by the mobo suppliers.

They've only been around since 2018 and they are a very budget brand.

Also, they have less than favourable warranty conditions compared to the big brands = you get what you pay for I guess.

I found memory
Kingston hyper fury
hx434c19fbk2/32
2x16 for 32gb

however the memory on the list is
hx434c19fb2k2/16

which is 2x8 16gb

is the top model not compatible?

check this memory QVL list -
please read my previous message.
what do you think?

ugh buying memory has never been so complicated before. i might have to bite the bullet and get something new just so i can guarantee it works

Stay away from oloy, Go with Crucial or Mushkin and call it a day.

I have an asus prime z370-a rev 1.04

it has 2 m.2 sockets, but I cannot find any information on what generation (do they call them generations?) m.2 it supports.

can this mobo handle m.2 gen 4?

anyone can please tell?
TPU_z370A_PCIe_3.0_across_board.png

The board's manual seems to be clear that all slots support 3.0, and that it supports Optane. AFAIK, and as far as I can see in Intel ARK, there never were any PCIe 2.0 Optane drives.

Also, 'spec' for both the chipset(PCH) and all the CPUs I could find, are PCIe 3.0
TPU_z370_PCIe_3.0_across_board.png

I assume 2.0 is a listed option/feature if using risers/extensions, or if there's some freak compatible CPU that's gen2 limited.

PCIe devices, like NVMe drives are (usually) fully backwards and forwards compatible between generations. There are occasionally pedantic-seeming caveats, but I can confirm a gen3 P1600X runs fine in a PCIe 1.0 x1 slot. A gen4 drive will work on your motherboard (though, bandwidth constrained to "effectively, Gen4 x2" speeds)

my max memory listed by asus website is 64gb
which means I should fall into the 2x32gb option, but when I Google it, it says my mobo supports 16gb max per slot.

means with 2 slots I can only have 32gb max, not 64. but your findings seem to contradict that?

oh wait I see... because my cpu is 8th gen i7 8700k, I can only support 16gb max per slot

thank you very much

I replied to your original post, about NVMe storage devices and PCIe generation support.
However, as to your most-recent query; I do see the RAM 'features' in my screenshot.

That "64GB max" in Asus' documentation is going to be based off 16GB sticks using all 4 slots (4x16GB).
Which, was probably the max you'd find in a single UnbufferedDIMM around release date.

It is typically best practice to limit 'stress' on the memory controller by going with just 2 sticks. (plus, theoretically, you can add even more later)
If you are not OCing, or 'tweaking', then the above point is moot; you can fill the slots w/ spec-compatible, quality 4x 16GB UDIMMs without worry.
(Crucial/Micron has great warranty service, from my years-gone-by experience)

To best answer your question on RAM support (to the best of my knowledge and experience):
It is not impossible that your Z370A will accept 32GB UDIMMs.
(meaning: you could have 2x32GB sticks for 64GB)
But, be warned:
Without explicit mention of added support for 32GB UDIMMs in a UEFI/BIOS changelog
or
someone else's testing, and reporting on reddit, twitter, or another forum
32GB UDIMMs are honestly not likely to work.
(meaning: unless your board has bad DIMMslots or you're hoping to really tweak your build, get 4x16GB of something good and compatible. "easymode" is googling parts listing in Asus' QVL for your board)

OBTW, I've had decent luck with 'one digit off' parts.
IIRC, the 4GB DDR(1) ECC sticks in my K8N-DL are that way, a digit or few off from known-compatibles..

Most of the time they're a DRAM production revision, speed, or latency revisions. Do make sure they're unbuffered non-ecc, there are some kingston, etc. sticks that have VERY similar model numbers, but are totally different, due to ECC or Registered/Buffered ECC sticks.
