Mouse Weirdly Acting Up?

Since yesterday, my mouse has been going completely crazy—it moves erratically, jumps randomly from one corner of the screen to another, and clicks on things uncontrollably! It even makes beeping sounds from time to time. It seems like the mouse even accidentally clicked "Close," causing some windows to shut on their own.

Can anyone help me fix this issue?

Some details:

  • I just bought the mouse today, so it shouldn’t be faulty. I also tested it on another PC, and it works like clockwork
  • I'm using Windows 11.
  • The issue started suddenly, without me changing anything.
  • My keyboard and other USB devices work normal.
  • I tried using a different USB port, but that didn’t help.
  • My drivers are up to date.

I appreciate any help!

Unfortunately, it does sound like a faulty mouse. Random clicks can be because of a faulty switch, everything's delayed because of some sort of system load, or there's something wrong with the sensor or the surface the mouse is riding on. Polling rate too high? Dunno, I would RMA it if other mice act normally.

If all else fails, give it some cheese. Mice LOVE cheese.

The mouse is likely faulty. Test with a different one to make sure, then return. The idea that a freshly bought mouse cannot be faulty is erroneous - things can come defective from factory, nothing has a 0% lemon rate. As for it working on a different PC - might be that something about your config confuses it or triggers the incorrect behavior. Run a security check just to be sure.
But we overall are just guessing here - you have provided no specs, no mouse model, no list of things running in the background. Not much to go on.

Thanks for the responses! I understand that new hardware can sometimes be faulty, but I already tested the mouse, and it worked perfectly—no erratic movement or random clicks. I even gave it some cheese.

I could buy a new one, but if this one works fine on another system, doesn't that suggest something else causing the problem?

I ran a security scan, and nothing suspicious came up. Any ideas on what might be interfering with the mouse input? Maybe some PC setting?

Would really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions before I resort to replacing a mouse that seems to work fine elsewhere.

Your system could have been compromised by a hacker. Swap ports, remove any mouse software, try another mouse. Otherwise Reinstall Your OS, that means formatting the drive.

It can happen. Random incompatabilities is a thing when it comes to computer hardware*. As for troubleshooting, trying different USB ports and different computers is the only thing you can do (you can also try the mouse in Linux), and if only one of those computers have the problem you have one of those incompatibility problems and you should RMA the mouse.

*At a job we had two HP workstation laptops, and they were purchased at the same time, and one of them was unable to communicate with a specific Cisco switch. The kicker? We replaced the entire motherboard in the laptop under warranty and it was still unable to connect to the switch. It was in one of those shared office buildings and becauce it wouldn't connect to anything no matter what RJ45 port I connected it to I assumed the NIC was faulty, and because we had a fancy on-site warranty I just called a guy, and he came and replaced the motherboard, and when it still didn't work he went to the the network rack for the building and we reached the conclusion that that the problem was indeed that that specific laptop woud not connect to that specific switch, and btw to this day it works fine with any other network.
