So, I was just playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and noticed that my GPU could use some love. I haven't repasted in about 15 months, and I last used some TF8 on it.

My temps started creeping up about 2 months ago, but this is on another level.

I even have my power limit at 90% and I changed the thermal limit to 80C. Do note that while gaming, the card hit the thermal limit, but it does not engage on the hot spot. Despite being 80.7C, the thermal limit did not engage.

This was taken immediately after I shut the game down. I wonder if both the paste and thermal pads need to be redone. Even the memory temperature is much higher than normal. It used to top out at about 56C.

Time for kryosheet to the rescue?

In techpowerup's review of kryosheet, I believe W1zz tested it on a 7900 xt, and it worked very well. beat pastes even.

I had the same issue on my laptop 12700H. Thermal paste do not work well or at all (factory default is PTM7950 which I had cleaned off).

You can also try TG Phasesheet if you can find it. Its fairly new to the market. But even cheap random PTM pads off amazon/ebay will still work despite not being genuine 7950 It just wont give you the best results as the genuine and more expensive pads will.

80+ at < 400W ... I´m thinking you´re right.

With previous max temp of 56c, there is no point in using "high-end". Go for something with long term stability. I would go for der8auer´s Duronaut. He is known to publish any findings regarding defects etc. in his products.

TP8 you say.... Igor´s lab have issued a do not buy warning if memory serves.

Check and be sure your heatsinks are clean too, doesn't matter what TIM or padding you use if all that is dirty.
Make sure it's cooling fans are working properly as well.

Interesting. Probably because it´s much cheaper to buy the real thing, divide it into 10-40 smaller pads and sell each for the price of the whole sheet, than it is to manufacture a fake/counterfeit and underperforming product.
I bought some 0.1 and 0.2mm phase change and graphite sheets from Wurth and Laird but haven't gotten around to test them yet. They are about A4 in size, so if they work ok, I´m good for a while.

So while yes, the card needs to be repasted, it appears that those crazy temps were due to Fan Control not running at startup like it typically does. The pump was running but not all of the fans.

I have noticed on occasion that the software gets stuck in a manner and no longer controls the fans it is linked to.

I still have a 20C delta between hotspot and core, but it isn't anywhere close to or exceeding thermals limits. The VRAM is comfortably at 56C as it was. Crisis averted for the moment lol.

I do think when I do the maintenance again, I will be switching to Kryosheet and using the TG Shield or something similar to mask off the SMD on the GPU.

Anyone else have that issue sometimes with Fan Control?
