Hello, and thanks for reading this.
So we this laptop mentioned in the title name, and im abit confused when you actually need a modded BIOS, and a modded inf driver.

The old GPU blew up in the laptop, so we found these 2 in our storage.

GTX 770M and a GTX 880M, so we have to choose which one we want to put in.

Now my question is, do both these cards needs a modded BIOS and a modded inf driver?

You wont know unless you try them.

Oh okay. What does that exactly mean?

Ive tried putting in the 880M, and it starts up just fine, it can see an GPU card under device manager, but when installing its driver its failing.

Would that need both modded bios, and modded inf file, or just the modded inf file?

There are several issues in these cases... fit, connections, but most importantly on "store bought" lappies, make sure the TDP is less as the colling system may be ill equipped to handle. Also many mass market vendors use modified drivers to tailor the mGPU to the cooling and control system. A generic driver may not be up to the task

you need to update the firmware and the bios. there is a walkthrough available. i'd of linked you to my thread where I attempt just this but the card I received wouldn't work, as the vendors have introduced an incompatibility between certain brands. I had someone who works for msi even try to help. it was a no go. once you have a working compatible card and you've updated everything. the card will just work and windows will recognise it and start downloading drivers. All the drivers you need are on the msi site. make sure you update everything in order or you will brick the system. Good luck :toast:

Problem is hardware white lists, you would need a modified motherboard bios, (not gpu bios) find out what gpus that laptop supports from the maker and use that, make sure it is specifically for your laptop.

Sometimes a larger brick is needed too.

Make sure that the GTX 880m has enough cooling. That type of gpu has heating problems. They run fast but produce lots of heat. I once had that gpu, sold it and went with a 780m instead. Later sold that and went 970m.

Its a known issue with these chipsets. there were thousands of people complaining that their cards stopped working. with the latest bios and firmware modded even. and msi guy(someone working out of hours) said to get another card... if you approach msi forums you should be able to get your gpu and motherboard bios modded. my gpu didnt even show up in windows properly. we couldn't get anywhere with it.

I hope you know that the OP is talking about a mobile gpu, the 880m. You cant just mod that or the motherboard that easily.
