16 Psyche is one of the most mysterious objects in our solar system, and scientists could soon be getting a close-up view thanks to a newly confirmed Nasa mission.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_Psyche

If the asteroid could be transported back to Earth, the iron alone would be worth $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).

16 Psyche is located in the large asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and may have started as a planet, before it was partially destroyed during the formation of the solar system.

Now, it is a 130 mile (200km) wide chunk of metal, made up of iron, nickel and a number of other rare metals, including gold, platinum and copper.

Lindy Elkins-Tanton the lead scientist on the Nasa mission and the director of Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration, said: '16 Psyche is the only known object of its kind in the solar system, and this is the only way humans will ever visit a core.

Global News Canada

The mission is targeted to launch in October 2023, arriving at the asteroid in 2030, following a Mars flyby in 2025. In December, researchers also put forward the suggestion that Psyche could contain water, which could make it a 'resource stopover' as humans try to colonise Mars.

We can't get bk on the moon let alone land on an asteroid too much money for space exploration that needs to be spent on war ;)

The NASA should hire Superman, SuperGirl and Iron Man and for some extra help Thor.

With the Team i have mentioned they just need a couple of minutes.

I will be forever grateful to NASA for spending US tax dollars on space and broadcasting all of it live so i can fulfill my dreams through other peoples footsteps

$10,000 Quadrillion = $10 Quintillion. I saw that headline in the news already and that irked me.... no one presents numbers as 10,000 million for 10 billion. Why must science articles be "dumbed-down"? (not a shot at you CAPS, I know that was the original headline in the media). Yeah, I should get over it but I'm tired of everything being catered to the slow.

The big numbers thing confused me for years and then i was told i was using "old" numbers......and i realized why there were so many American billionaires.

The old UK meaning of a billion was a million million, or one followed by twelve noughts (1,000,000,000,000).

The USA meaning of a billion is a thousand million, or one followed by nine noughts (1,000,000,000).

The new trillions
  • Trillion - 1 + 12 zeros....see post #8, it used to be a billion.
  • Quadrillion - 1 + 15 zeros
  • Quintillion - 1 + 18 zeros
  • Sextillion - 1 + 21 zeros
  • Septillion - 1 + 24 zeros
  • Octillion - 1 + 27 zeros
  • Nonillion - 1 + 30 zeros

If the asteroid could be transported back to Earth, the iron alone would be worth $10,000 quadrillion (£8,072 quadrillion).

Can't imagine anything going wrong with that.... Whoops, who dropped the colossal ELE object into low earth orbit by mistake?

Joking aside, if it could actually be transported back in tact or at least in single digit pieces, I'd say that's f-king huge for NASA and space exploration. Studying materials that were formed outside of Earth in person instead of sensors will reveal a lot of knowledge we couldn't even think of.

$10,000 * 10^15 (short scale) = $10 * 10^18 = $10^19

2014 estimate for global economy was $77.609 * 10^12. Assuming that estimate is correct and there was no limitations on retrieving its minerals, it would cause a metal market collapse.

The only reasonable way to harvest it would be to bring it into near Earth orbit with some kind of cable tether between it and Earth with machinery that can transverse the cable. That would severely limit how much material can reach earth preventing a market collapse while offering the cheapest metals on earth. Most likely the price from the elevator would match domestic supplies of metals and the price difference would go to offsetting the cost of moving it as well as fund retrieving other asteroids for mining.

I don't think it's really a question of "if" but "when."

and consequently a complete collapse of the global economy.

The only way it could collapse the global economy is if it collided with Earth. Most of humanity would be dead so...
