Hi all.

I just wanted to ask you guys what would you get. In 10 days i will be picking up parts. I got two choices - Am4 or 1700. I watched a lot of videos and reviews and i think i will get Intel...probably :)
They come very close..

Intel build

12100f OC 5.0 ghz+
Asrock b760m ripide
2x16 ddr5 Patriot 6000 cl 30

Amd

5600x
Msi pro 550 a
2x16 ddr4 viper 3600 cl18

Msi mag 550w
Rx 6700 sapphire pulse

Keep in mind that i would want in distant future update both system with better cpus like 13600k or 5800x/3d editions and gpu.

If i go with Intel i could buy used ddr5 patriot 6400 cl32. Official Patriot support said they dont recommend that fast memory but i think i could still get them and manually oc them as i will be oc 12100f anyway. I wont use their full 6400 potencial but i could use them for future 13600k build...price of new 6000 and used 6400 are very similar - 6400 are a little cheaper.

I think i should go with Intel...even after overclock 12100f takes almost half the power of 5600x

What are your thoughts?

Hmm. 4-core 8-thread 3.3GHz i3-12100F vs 6-core 12-thread 3.7GHz 5600X, I think I'd go for more threads. Just a personal choice.

5600X, even despite 12100F being juiced to its maximum, is parring 12400F, so in whatever games where you can't have enough threads the AM4 option will win. Sometimes marginally, sometimes significantly.

However, CPUs like 13600K beat ANYTHING AM4 in gaming, even X3D parts are slower. I don't even mention huge advantage in professional workloads.

What I would've done is buying an LGA1700 system, selling that i3 instantly and slotting 12400F to juice it to 5 GHz and forget about upgrades till both AM4 and LGA1700 become as outdated as LGA1155 is now.

That 5600x or 12100f will need to stay for at least 1 year...
Thats why i would favor Intel...get fast 32 gb ddr5 memory now and in some time just switch cpus and gpus...hopefuly rtx 4070 super and thats it...

I think you would have to be honest with yourself on your CPU upgrade schedule. Out of the box the 5600x is the better system. Once you bring in CPUs like the 5700/5800X3D and 13600k with DDR5, it becomes game specific although with more modest GPUs the difference between the two would be closer together.

You can get a 12400F for cheaper than the 5600X and 13400F for a little more. I'd do that before expecting a 4-core to keep up with gaming well. the 13400F should last you quite a while too.

Nah, i made the all calculations needed for my tight budget. Ddr5 memory is much more expensive than ddr4 so the b760m mobo from b550.

And you are underestimate that 4 little cores.
:)

I just built a system with a 12400f and Asrock B760M PG Riptide! OCed to 5GHz all core, on a cheap Thermalright 120mm cooler, system is super snappy and nice! 790 singel/ 6100 multi core score running CPU-Z. Fun doing some BLCK OC too!

I know...it is like back in the day when we could go up 500mhz+ and enjoy massive gains. How is the power consumption in gaming after oc?
