New OS drive

Currently have a SM961(256Gb) Windows drive.
Looking @ SN770 or P31 Hynix gold -1TB as an upgrade (i do copy big files/folders sometime )
Thoughts?

The P31 is a Gen3 drive with 1GB cache, the SN770 is a Gen4 but dram-less.

I use a Gigabyte M30 1TB with 2GB ddr3l cache and it's a gen3 drive for my Windows 11 Pro and I can see a difference copying data around the speed is steady for longer.

So if you can live with a gen3 drive and it's not really that expensive.

I cannot really see a price tag for the P31 Hynix gold but I know the Gigabyte ain't far from the SN770 in price.

But I would take the SK Hynix if you cannot afford the Gigabyte.

I would get a good long lasting reliable SSD for the OS, game storage may be cheaper imo...

SN770 is an excellent drive, DRAM or no.

SLC caching exists, as do modern controllers, DRAM is optional.

If you can afford 2 TB get that instead, it's worth it.

Those Hynix P31 Gold is nice. 600TBW for the 1TB drives. I have a few of them. Gen 3 vs Gen 4 doesn't matter if you're sustained reads and writes are lower than the spec. Avoid DRAM-Less, unless you only write small files. Otherwise it could take hours just to copy 1TB.

Well it's done now ,lol
The cache on that sn770 covers over 300GB of writes at full speed, that's one reason I went for that, instead of the gold P31, I did almost get the P31...
