According to Gamespot, Nintendo has cancelled pre-orders of the Switch 2 in the US due to the recently announced tariffs by the US government. The company has issued a statement to the publication that reads "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged." This suggests that the Switch 2 will still reach US shores, but the question is if the pricing will remain as announced.

Besides affecting end customers, this is likely to affect all of Nintendo's US retail partners, since retail chains such as Best Buy, Target and Walmart have been preparing to start accepting pre-orders for the new handheld console on the 9th of April. Nintendo's statement doesn't really give away any details, but it suggests that the company is re-evaluating its MSRP, as Japan was hit with a 24 percent tariff by the US. If the tariff was to be handed straight over to the end consumers, this could mean the Switch 2 will retail for closer to US$560 than the promised US$450, which would make it prohibitively expensive for many potential buyers. Hopefully Nintendo will figure out what it'll do quickly and keep its fanbase update with what it'll do in plenty of time ahead of the launch in June.

You're free to discuss the tariffs, just no insults or fisticuffs.

$450 was already too much. Seems like the Switch 2 is destined to flop like the Wii U.
We obviously don't know what will happen, but yeah, even at say $550, it would be too expensive.

The problem is that you cannot "discuss around" certain topics without actually mentioning those certain topics. Well, you can try but it ends up being a circus.
On the other hand - do we really need the political discussions knowing how they usually turn out?

Understandable. I don't think anyone predicted the tariff rates on Japan to be that high. But I guess the American emperor is stuck in the 80s.

Still can't believe first party games are 90$ and they look like remastered PS3/360 era games. Nintendo fans will buy anything.

Hmm, but China decided to be player in game of tarrifs. 34% on to all goods from US, included PC hardware.

Pretty much the contrary my friend. It's refreshing that they don't partake in politics and focus on Tech instead. You have plenty of platforms to do that elsewhere.

Guess what smart You pay those tariffs yourself.

It literally just there to make the 1% richer than they already are and the public voted for that stuff.
Too simplistic of a view, consumers can't just absorb any increase in pricing, demand will go down for a lot of these products/services. There is no guarantee that the "1% will get richer", some will definitely lose money.

Prices for other consoles and PC parts will follow shortly, but all of them being aligned won’t help the fact that more and more people simply won’t be able to afford it. This is the first call of a new reality
Indeed, prices of a lot of things, including cost of living are getting out of hand.

It won't flop but it will certainly not reach Switch level of success, at least in the short term. In Japan the console is much cheaper, in the UK it's 400 GBP, in Europe it's already dropping to 430, at least in France.

Mario Kart World alone is going to be a strong system seller, especially in a pack with the console where it's cheaper

Switch 2 will flop just like GC, WiiU, 3DS. Tariffs will affect all consoles, so it is what it is.

yikes, thought the high price was because they already expected the tariffs... Is the price of the individual games also affected?

I was trying to figure out the Japan story as I had heard Switch 2 is cheaper there. Apparently often times it is cheaper for people to import Nintendo consoles at launch.

To counter this Nintendo is apparently releasing a Japan exclusive Japanese language only version that is cheaper. If you buy the International or multi language version it is the same price as we are seeing in the other regions.

It sounds like this version may even be region locked.

From what I could research, it seems digital downloads should not be effected.
