NO Triple-SLi for 8800 GT

For all of you (like myself) that were thinking of buying three 8800 GTs and running them in Triple-SLi, nVidia is laughing in your face.
They only allow Triple-SLi using cards with two SLi connectors, so only the 8800 GTX and Ultra are eligible. Which is ironic, because those are the only two cards that can't physically be put in Triple-SLi, while the 8800 GT is perfect for it with it's single-slot cooler design.

So now I'm pissed off as hell at nVidia. I can't fit three 8800 Ultras in a computer, and I'd rather just use better cooling on two and overclock.

Once again, I have to ask "What is nVidia thinking?". And this after what I thought was a huge success and step in the right direction with the 8800 GT.

So what do you think about this? Not that it would make much difference to me now.. I hate this. :shadedshu

Yeah thsi was posted befor. did you order 3 8800gt's? maybe a update down the road will enable tri-Sli with the lower cards.

IIRC, the original rumours said it would start off being only for the GTX and Ultra cards, and later on support for the lower cards would be added, so this isn't really a huge surprise.

I personally feel like you are just looking for a way to complain, the only thing I see more useless than TRI-SLI is QUAD-SLI, lol.. I do agree on one bit though, if there was a card to do TRI-SLI with, it would be the 8800 GT.

weer... if you had actually bothered looking up on the forums you would have found that this was stated quite a while back about being only for the gtx and ultra

just to add a sly dig, crossfire x looks like it will work nicely across a range of cards

Good luck just getting SLi to work with two GT's! It doesn't work. Nvidia hasn't released the patch yet.

What are you talking about? I've seen different tri-SLi setups and they all used the G80 dual slot coolers. They were close to each other, but obviously fit fine. Like these two examples (3 GTXs , 3 Ultras on 2 different MoBos);

I think Tri-SLi should be left to those who don't care about money to begin with and would want tri-GTX/Ultras over Tri-GT anyways.

nV is smart to do this, to keep it's GTX and Ultra fan base loyal. Woulldn't make sense to have those who spent $1,200+ on their Ultra rigs being outdone by those who only spent $600 just a few scant months later.

And it's not like nV needs more GT sales anytime soon, they have more than they can handle already.

i see a lot of people on here saying maybe later they will support tripple sli on lower cards such as 8800gt well i guess most of you dont read much cause if you did you would know that tripple sli requires two sli bridges per card and the reason for this is the increased badwidth that is required to add a thrid card. THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR THIS FOR LOWER CARDS ITS PHYICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DO IT IN TRI SLI NO PLANS FOR DUAL BRIDGES However there is the possiblilty of quad sli if they were to combine two cards however these cards are so good that unlike the 7950gx2 i bet they would just bring the sli bridge to its knees i mean just frickin make it beg

The expansion slot space is completely full, there is no room for any other expansion cards, the second and third cards are going to be sucking the hot air coming out of the first card, and the one is actually tilted to the side almost to the extent of breaking the slot itself.

So no, I don't see it as a possibility. And as I've said, two 8800 Ultras @ 750/2600 will beat three 8800 Ultra @ stock, and if not then it's still worth it because I'll get to use my X-Fi card.

Yes, I see the logic, but I don't think that nVidia does.
They released the 8800 Ultra for 900$, completely screwing with their fan base who spend 1200$ for 8800 GTX SLi.

Yes, those greedy bastards want us to buy the 8800 GTX/Ultra which are no better than the 8800 GT, in order to have Triple-SLi. But the thing that doesn't make sense is how they are going to be able to have three 8800 Ultras in one computer. Unless the 780i SLi will come with 9 expansion slots, it doesn't seem possible.
So I guess they're just laughing at us with the 8800 Triple-SLi and are making us wait 'till the 9800 series to actually do it.

That seems to be a function of the non-flexible bridge more than the cards fitting together, the GTX setup doesn't have that same issue, and solving that would be pretty easy. The final shipping solutions should fit better as they should be geared toward that MoBo's spacing not simply trying to set 1 bridge to fit all like THG did in this case. That MSI board actually has 4 PEG slots, they are forced to use the one closest to the others due to the bridge, notice the single unoccupied PEG slot at the end there.

However use a board like the The DFI NF-680i LT you have 2 expansion slots between each card, thus increasing the spacing another full slot in addition to the example of the MSI mobo, but you couldn't use the bridge they used in both their setups because the spacing would be off even more;

You didn't say anything about expansion slots in your original statement just that they wouldn't physically fit, but that should give you enough room now for that Audigy card.

2 GTXs still beat a single Ultra in the apps that benefit significantly from SLi.
