Nokia’s 3310 returns to life as a modern classic

"Nokia has sold 126 million of its original 3310 phone since it was first introduced back in September, 2000. It was a time before the iPhone, and Nokia ruled with popular handsets that let you play simple games like Snake. Now the 3310 is making a nostalgic return in the form of a more modern variant, thanks to Nokia-branded phone maker HMD. Like its predecessor, it will still be called the Nokia 3310, but this time it’s running Nokia’s Series 30+ software, with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a 2-megapixel camera, and even a microSD slot.

Those specs are still fairly basic by our modern phone standards, but that’s the beauty of such a basic featurephone. Unlike the brick-like sturdiness of the old 3310, the modern variant is a little smaller, thinner, and lighter all round. It’s also a lot more colorful this time around, with glossy yellow and red colors, and matte grey and dark blue models. It’s instantly recognizable as a Nokia, and HMD has even included a modern Snake game on the handset just to play on the nostalgia."

"Opera Mini is bundled for basic web surfing, but the real selling point is battery life. Just like most featurephones, standby time on the Nokia 3310 is 31 days, alongside a talk time of 22 hours. That’s a massive amount of battery life, but as the phone is so basic you’re hardly going to be wasting battery away on Snapchat or Facebook.

HMD is planning to make the new Nokia 3310 available in Q2 this year for 49 euros ($52)."

Am i the only one that thinks the new 3310 looks kinda ugly??? I think its the curves and the shape that makes it look kind of weird like...

THe original 3310 looked kind of 'boxy' if you get what im saying. The way it looks in the picture is like one of them toys you get from a dollar store for your kid that plays a sound every time you push a button.


Either way, While i think its great they are bringing it back. Part of me thinks they wont make their money back on them. One of the reps has already said the new 3310 is more of a 'niche' product but nokia's real handset they are trying to push is the Nokia 5 which looks like any other Sony Xperia X/Z or Huawei handset out there. Its just generic.

My dad still has (2, has an extra for a backup) of an old Nokia phone - I'm not sure its the 3310, but the thing is pushing 18 years old now. It still holds a charge that'll last for days and he gets great reception way out in the woods at his cabin.

Even with this updated version, I doubt he'd switch over. Being in his 60s, I can't see him changing his ways. He did, however, mention to me the other day that he wished his phone could take pictures....but because it doesn't, he still makes use of disposable cameras.

Wanted to buy something Nokia for my granma, but after doing some research, settled on a generic china-phone. For 1/3 of the price it comes with a decent charger, headphones, and an extra battery.

I had one for years, only got rid of it after storing it in a drawer for a few more years after service ended for CDMA phones here.

I wish my dad 3310 work, miss playing those space impact games. Even if it work now there is no more 2G network in my area already.

I would say the "new" 3310 looks good to me, though I miss the metal frame and heaviness of the old 3310. There is metal skeleton inside that phone.

The great thing about feature phones is its simplicity, I live during an age where I going crazy about mp3 players being high end that basic phones now seems so advance to me lol. Probably going to get one as an emergency phone

Now the best candy bar phone I ever had was the Sony Ericsson W810i.

I'm patiently waiting for reviews.

It could definitely look better and I would prefer it running a Series 40 OS (S30+ doesn't support J2ME apps), but if it's bugfree and the battery really holds that much (3 weeks +), then I'm definitely buying it.

Now the best candy bar phone I ever had was the Sony Ericsson W810i.

Agree overrated as shit. You had damaged your diplex due to dropping on the floor. Some RF transmitters also were prone to cracks.

I think the only Nokia that survived the work environment abuse was an N95. And it'd better stay alive, for $400 I paid for it.
My stepdad still uses it, only had to get a new battery.

Always wanted an e-Ink phone. Too bad they don't make those in ruggedized housing.

Only Nokia that I had was Nokia 3110 Classic. It was actually quite nice. As for the new Nokia 3310, I actually prefer Nokia 150 from design perspective. It just has that similar design consistency as 3110 Classic that I had. Here, these curvatures with rectangular screen just feel really weird. And merged navigation and answer/reject buttons look awkward.

The addition of Opera Mini on this one is nice though. I was using Opera Mini JAVA version on the 3110c. Worked pretty well.

If there was a feature phone with good screen, good camera with flash and Opera Mini as main browser with outstanding battery life since it would be a feature phone and not Android with gazillion services draining battery, I'd have that. Main issue with feature phones was the camera which was always fixed focus garbage that ruined everything.

If you are talking about the original 3310 I will have to disagree, I really liked it. Mine was dropped and thrown around, never had issues with reception and I quite liked the interface, everything was easy to find and there wasn't lots of unnecessary junk.
I had mine for years and would probably still be using it as I like basic phones, if the network it used hadn't been stopped.
I won't be getting the new version though, it just looks like cheap plastic junk to me.
