NVidia now HIDING hot spot temperature? A great problem IMO.

I learned that at least on their FE 5090 models, Nvidia is now hiding the chip hot spot temperature. I hope it will not be the rule for all 50 series cards!

Hot spot temperature is an important health status indicator of the graphic card!

For example my current 4070 started with the hot spot being about 10°C above the whole chip temperature, but then it slowly started drifting higher and now is 30°C above. My card is probably affected by the crap-paste problem Igor reported about, and now thanks to the hot spot temperature I know that I should probably fix it.

Geee I wonder who knows more about what constitutes the health status of a GPU. Is it you, or NVIDIA engineers?

I ignore all kinds of temps, hotspot is one of them.. mostly. The full fury of the card is being applied when you see elevated hotspots.. at least on Nvidia.

But 30c.. I would have opened it up after 15.. I use a Heilos pad fyi

I really wonder how I did know everytime when it was time to repaste my ASUS g75VW notebook. I never looked at the hotspot thing. There are other indicators also. Always dried up noctua thermal paste.

I agree, Nvidia has gone the way of Apple in terms of design and hiding temps.
The hotspot sensor is useful for checking if paste has gone bad, and helps determine if you applied paste correctly. It makes no sense for hotspot temperature to be obscured, other than planned obsolescence and to refuse RMA's.

Noctua paste is fine, IMO. It just isn't very good for a bare die, or a chip running at higher temps in a laptop. Using PTM or similar thermal sheet is a better solution for laptops and GPU's.

Engineers know everything, they never make mistakes, and certainly his opinion as an employee is above everyone else, safety > profit. Stop complaining. After all, there is no precedent for planes crashing, cars exploding, smartphone batteries catching fire and CPUs degrading. None of this was caused by human error, I promise.

We did not have hotspot sensors until the 30 series and it was just fine? I mean 1080Tis / 1060s etc are still running just fine

Some people that state this is a non issue would be griping if other companies did the same or relocated it...

I was going to post the exactly same thing.

At least for me, the hotspot temp is just giving anxiety instead of the "normal" GPU temp sensor.

Yep, I dont care about the hotspot much. There is really not much you can do with it other than change TIM or pads.

At least you could do that. I suppose Nvidia doesn't want you to tinker anymore. I wonder why.

By the way, does Nvidia still define throttling point by "normal" GPU temperature instead of hotspot?

As far as I know both the fan speed and the max temp that you can set in e.g. afterburner are tied to the "normal" gpu temp (at least on 10 and 30 series) and not the hotspot temp

It does help so the precious expensive device doesn't become a paperweight considering cheap pads and pastes are used as a '1 size fits all solution'

Now I would be really upset if Nvidia is hiding the hotpot temperature, because nobody gets to mess with my Sichuan hotpot.

Yeah, on 10 and 20 series, definitely. I just haven't had a newer Nvidia card (and by the way things are going, that'll hold for the foreseeable).

Yeah not much to tinker with.

Not sure about the throttle point, I see it drop a bin the closer the core gets to 60. I have never seen the actual core temp in the 80s, just the hotspot has made it to 81 during MSFS 2020.

I also just run my card bawls out, no stock speeds here.

Dropping a bin is fine. I've seen cards fluctuate at crazy clocks when they reach throttling point, though (I think 83 ˚C on Pascal and Turing).

Yeah that's how Gpu Boost n+1 works it starts throttling around 50 or 60 depending on which gen
