some people like to run orthos for over 24 hours in order to insure stability, but 1-3 hours is good enough i say

However long you think is good. Some people insist on 24 hrs+. I'd say run it for as long as you don't need the comp for, or just overnight.

well i'm testing game performance with this rig, it's the new one i just built to replace my single core 4000 rig i'm just playin around my friend had it at 2.92 for a while and i just wanted to come out with an even 3ghz with my mem at 1000 5,5,5,15 or maybe lower i'll work on that after and then the vid card last, i must say though it's a zippy rig plays all my games just fine, and crysis well... i'm playin it at 1280x1024 on med settings and getting anywhere between 45-90 fps and it still looks good, the cinematics are a little choppy but i just got done running through the whole demo and it was fine

Am I correct in reading that you are running 2 instances of Orthos? Orthos is for 2 cores. Are you stressing a Quad?
Dual Orthos is pretty fierce (on a dual core CPU) and I wouldn't expect many systems to handle it for more that a couple hours IF you are truly stressing the CPU by using small FFTs and on "9" priority.

Personally, I don't use orthos anymore. It cooks the processor for no good reason, Prime 95 works fine. I ususally go 4 hours on mine.

@JC I wasn't under the impression there were two different utilities "orthos" and "Prime 95"? or are you referring to the new Beta orthos that tests quads?

@DR Spank. running two instances would have no greater effect on the cpu than running one as either way both cores will be used at 100%, though you were correct in saying that one instance is all that's necessary

and finally to psychomage, if orthos runs for even 20 minutes without a hitch you can be pretty damn sure that you're stable for gaming, if you're worried about it though and don't have the time atm for a good couple hour orthos test just bump the cpu voltage one notch until you can do a long test

what about the settings i'm kinda new to dual core so i'm still learning the little things, i know i need to run 2 of them and set them to different affinities, but what about the run settings do the blend test or the gromacs stress??

blend if you want to test both the cpu and ram for stability
small ffts for the cpu (the only memory used does not exceed the cpu L2 cache)
the gromacs is very good for multiple core testing and I recommend it

I just run one and on blend cuz it test the mem and the cpu, cuz small FFTs only test the cpu and gets it the hottest, and priority on 1 it doesnt matter to me cuz the only thing it does by putting it higher makes the comp slower if you try to do something else

Yeah, Prime 95 does the same thing that orthos does, but it doesn't heat up as far. Prime was the main one before Orthos.
