P5N-D Second GFX card problem

Hey guys. Just got my second 8800gt today, and installed it into the 2nd PCIe slot. I powered on the PC, the fan on the 2nd card fired up to full speed, and stayed there. Made it through post, got into windows, and, NOTHING. It doesn't see a second card in my device manager, Everest only shows one card installed, and shows that "PCIe x16 #2" is not in use. I have moved both cards around, and they both work perfectly fine in the first slot, but neither will function in the second. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, no. The only option that I have, is to change between PCI, and PCIe graphics. That is what I don't understand. The card IS getting power. But, the board doesn't see that the slot is filled.

Yes. I uninstalled my video drivers. Rebooted into safe mode, ran DriverSweeper, powered down, installed both cards, rebooted, and bam. Just one card is being seen. Then, I did the entire process again, but installing one card at a time, and rebooting in between. And the same thing happened.

Tried that already also. Computer acts as if it is booting, but I get no video. My EVGA has a VF900 on it, that plugs into a mobo header, and the BFG that I am trying to use in the second port has the original cooler on it. When I had the BFG in the first slot, when I booted, it would run the fan at max speed until the computer posted, then would go down to the default setting. However, when I have the BFG in the second slot, the Fan will always run at 100%.

damn...
Simple solutions:
Clean the slot...
Check for any jumpers that need to be set to enable that slot... (a la oldschool SLI boards)
then try again with one vid card in that slot

More complicated solutions:
Update bios.

LOL.

I have the most up to date bios already. But, I will go through and check jumpers again. Asus thinks that the second slot is dead on the motherboard. And to think, they sent this board back to me 3 months ago on an RMA return. Never going back to Asus again.

Well, I bought a new board to replace this one. I wanted to anyway, and this was finally what got me to do it. I replaced it with an EVGA 750i FTW, hopefully that will do me a little better. Good price. Anyway, I am going to probably end up RMA'ing this board for the 3rd time, but not until I get my new one. So, in the meantime, I am still trying to solve this problem. I still haven't decided if it is something fried on the mobo, or if something is just conflicting somewhere.

Example.
I was checking my cards bios's, using a boot disk and nvflash, using the --info switch, I see this...

I have never seen that before. Could that by a clue at all? It says exactly the same thing with either card installed in slot 1, or with both installed at the same time. I'm baffled.

And maybe not... I just looked that up, and it is

nVIDIA nForce 200 (BR04) 24-Lane PCI Express 2.0 Switch

So, apparently, that is supposed to be there, and it is because the last time I flashed a card was before I had my Nvidia chipset. Damn.

The BR04 is part of the nForce chipset itself. As far as the actual issue, it's with the second slot. Nothing to do with drivers but more less bios and/or jumpers.

I will take a look at some information and get back with you on it.

I cleared the cmos, and there are no jumpers on board except for USB standby power.

I have a sinking feeling I will have the entire thing stripped apart by the end of the night chasing a problem I am never going to figure out, or will not be able to fix. Hehehehe, make the wife "happy". LOL

OK read up a little bit, even Asus recommended to those few instances that I read to RMA the board, complaining of hardware failure. :ohwell:

Nah, it's an EVGA 750i. But, for the price, I couldn't beat it. It will do until I can get this board fixed, then maybe sell them both, and get something MUCH nicer.

My Dad has his 8800GTS' SLI'd on an EVGA 750i FTW, I dont remember having to setup anything special.

No, you don't have to look. I think it is just the slot is not working properly. I even followed the manual exactly to the letter, and it still won't read it. Just doesn't make any sense.

Have you tried just having one graphics card in the slot you think is broken. On its own, with the main display plugged into it. I.e only one graphics card installed, and installed in the second slot.

That would confirm your suspisions.
