Hello everyone, I have an ASUS TUF GAMING B450M-PRO S motherboard with a Ryzen 5 5500. I know that my motherboard has 2 slots for m.2 SSD, I use the first slot for Samsung 980 500GB, and the second slot is empty. Will I be able to use a similar nvme SSD (also 3.0 x4) in the second slot or will it not work? I understand that the speed will be lower than advertised speed for the SSD (if it will be able for install), but it will still be faster than the sata SSD?

The SSD should work because the M.2_2 slot supports both NVME and SATA but the speed will of cause be lower than the main M.2_1 port.

Another thing to note this: *2 M.2_2 shares bandwidth with PCIEX16_2. When M.2_2 runs, PCIEX16_2 will be disabled.

So if you use the PCIEX16_2 slot it's a no go.

No, I only use PCIEX16_1 for the GPU

Thanks for the answer!

NVMe drives are fully backwards and forwards compatible. They are PCIe devices, and negotiate maximum-supported link speeds.
In modern systems, as boot drives (or otherwise), as long as there's connection to PCIe, it will work.

Gen2 x4 is ~ Gen3 x2, and many Optane drives used Gen3 x2.
Without reseaching and quoting #s, it'll be fine and still MUCH faster than any SATA SSD

Speaking to just how 'universal' NVMe drives are, even on 'ancient' machines they will work (with caveats)

As non-boot (storage, Page File, slog, cache, etc.) NVMe drives are a case of
"If it fits, it ships." Even Windows XP has a working driver for NVMe storage.

PCIexpress Generation doesn't matter, and Gen1.0x1 slots work just fine (w/ a very affordable adapter)

No screenies but, if you're determined enough you can even boot off of one on a PCIe Gen1.0 system.

Yes. Even on gen1x1, it's snappier than any SATA SSD, even if @ theoretically-lesser bandwidth.
NVMe, is a much more effcient and lower latency protocol vs. AHCI

Your welcome :lovetpu: and as @LabRat 891 says it won't run at full speed but still faster than a SATA SSD.

It's a good idea to fill out your System Specs a lot of people look at this too when someone asks for help.
