Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced today the global launch of its next generation virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR2. Featuring high fidelity visuals, new sensory features and enhanced tracking, PlayStation VR2 takes virtual reality gaming to a whole new level, enabling players to feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other. The PlayStation VR2 headset and included PlayStation VR2 Sense controller is available at the recommended retail price of $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980

Building upon key innovations from PlayStation 5 (PS5), PlayStation VR2 ushers in a new generation of virtual reality experiences that will captivate players' senses.

New Sensory Features with PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology: The combination of PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, PlayStation VR2 headset feedback, 3D Audio, and eye tracking brings emotion and immersion to life.

  • PlayStation VR2 Sense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way - whether it's adding tension to the pull of a bow string or vibration effects during an epic boss battle. With finger touch detection, the PS VR2 Sense controller can also detect the approximate location of your fingers, enabling you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.
  • Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player. It's created by a single built-in motor with vibrations that add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience. For example, gamers can feel a character's elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character's head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.
  • 3D Audio leverages PS5's Tempest 3D AudioTech to make sounds in the PS VR2 player's surroundings come alive, adding to this new level of immersion.
  • Eye Tracking detects the motion of the player's eyes, so a simple look in a specific direction can create an additional input for the game character. This allows players to interact more intuitively in new and lifelike ways.

Visual Fidelity: For a high-fidelity visual experience, PlayStation VR2 offers an OLED display with 4K HDR video format (2000 x 2040 per eye), smooth frame rates of 90 Hz/120 Hz, 110-degree field of view, and foveated rendering.

Headset-based Controller Tracking: With inside-out tracking, PlayStation VR2 tracks the player and the controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset. The player's movements and the direction they look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.

Designed for Comfort: The PlayStation VR2 headset was designed with comfort in mind - it's slightly lighter compared to the first PlayStation VR headset, even with the addition of new features. Also included is an integrated vent for extra air flow while playing, and a lens adjustment dial so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. PlayStation VR2 will also have a simple setup process—with a single cable connected directly to PS5, players can immediately jump into the VR experience.

I hope so, I am at least tempted by the V2 I wasn't the V1.

But that would be a deal winner, Sony should see that writing on the wall and act on it, = more sales.

I absolutely would buy it still, bit skint now but I would push my own margins if someone gets it up and running on pc.

Sony will not open this up to PC, probably ever. The device is being sold at a loss like consoles at launch in order to sell software. If they open it to PCVR they probably won't break even on the device.

I don't doubt that if the entire hacking/homebrew community dedicated their efforts to cracking the encryption Sony used they probably could. But will they? Who knows. What I know from previous Sony hardware jailbreaks is that you're best served buying the first gen hardware with the first iteration of their security because they are the ones which usually get exploits and can be unlocked. Sony are pretty good at patching vulnerabilities in future iterations.

At the price they're selling, they are not loosing that much per device, if at all. The specs are great, but not that great. Selling to the PC market would also enable them to leverage higher production volumes, something they definitely won't have while keeping it exclusive to the PS5, VR users are still a very small minority after all.

Who says it's encrypted at all? The controllers sure aren't, they just use a different scheme, and sony is now providing first party support for them - even the newer Dualsense.

I think they have nothing to loose offering PC compatibility, quite the opposite. It's a very niche device, it won't get paid on a dozen game licenses


And here it is, it does work, it accepts basic 1080p and is recognized as a second screen, some driver work and tweaks to how the gpu handles output to it and it will certainly be able to be used in full

That's a shame, if they did it would probably kill the Valve Index completely.

Sony won't but others will. Look at Trinus for PSVR.

Apparently connecting a PSVR2 USB-C cable to a PC results in it being seen as a run of the mill display limited to 1080p. SteamVR doesn’t know what to make of it though.

If the PSVR2 is sold at a loss it likely isn’t sold at that much of a loss. I hope some industrious individuals manage to hack PC support. I also hope the PSVR2 gets a wireless option.

If Sony wanted to they could make it a little harder to buy a PSVR2 if it were made to work with PC. They couldn’t do anything about the stock that is currently out there but down the road they could require a valid PS5 serial number (that hasn’t been used before for PSVR2 purchase) in order to complete the sale.

Why would they bother with that though?

In a year or so you can bet that the PSVR2 MSRP and or street price will be reduced. It happened to the original PSVR and it will happen to the PSVR2. So it makes a lot of sense to just wait for the first round of reductions.
