Please help me with my 4090

Hello,

I bought a RTX 4090 and it burnt the connector out melted it completely. I just replaced it via warranty and two months later it happened again. I bought a right angle adapter from cable mod thinking this would help. It burnt out. I just received my third 4090 and I am very hesitant to put it in my machine, because I’m afraid this is going to happen again. does anyone know how to prevent this from happening besides making sure it’s seated correctly? Also, is there any way to tell if I’ve gotten the updated model with shortened pins? Should I just get a 4080 and wait for the five series? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Didn't cable mod announce a V2 of that connector? I have one of their 12VHPwr cables to 4x 8 pins with a Gigabyte gaming OC and never had that issue I plugged it into the card prior to seating the card into my case though I check it like once a month.

Does the side panel push on a normal cable?

I havent even unboxed my new GPU because im afraid of putting it in. Im considering selling it and just getting a 4080 but I’m not sure. As far as the version two connector I’ve never heard of that but I’ll check it out. Again, I’m a little hesitant to put that in my machine because it failed on me once from that company.

Maybe get a different model 4090. This issue doesn't seem very common so maybe something on that PNY card makes it easier to not fully seat the cable. I did notice on some other AIB cards even fully seated it wiggles but that isn't the case on my Gigabyte gaming OC I would have sent it back if that was the case.

The FE card for sure got the updated plug but I am not sure if the other AIBs have or not.

If you decide it's too big a fire risk I'll trade you a 2 week old 7900 XTX and a bit of cash. 3 8 pin connectors, no fires.

And yes, I'm serious.

Its a Corsair 7000D Airflow

very good case but probably too narrow to vertical mount the gpu even with a 3rd party kit.

I was going to say it makes it really easy to make sure the card is flush

Here is mine in an 011XL which makes it easy to see the cable fully seated.

CableMod 12VHPwr to 4x 8 pin but they make a 2x 8 pin now which I would purchase over it.

Is this the new one?

I can't tell mine is the old one for sure and I have had 0 issues since I got the card in February.

From all the testing I have seen it is really hard to replicate so honestly you must have won the bad luck Lottery getting it to happen twice.

Just have to make sure you plug it in all the way. It will make a noticable click and you can physically see the pins go in all the way.

this is actually the main reason I turned down my irl friend's offer on the 4090, I was just legit scared of this new power connector based on all the burning news and such. and it was a Gigabyte, which have the worst RMA out of all the companies, confirmed by several sources.

All you have to do is.. plug it in. Maybe send some pictures so I can tell you if it's all the way or not. It's really not that complicated.

I sometimes push on the wires too, to make sure they are all the way in on the block as pushing the connector on can sometimes push the cables back in the connector, if you know what i mean.

Should I just get a 4080

I would keep the 4090 and power limit it using MSI afterburner to reduce power and heat, say 75% (to start with) then push up the PL when you have more confidence in the card behaving.

A 4090 with a 75% PL will reduce a lot of power and heat and prob still be faster and cooler than a flat out 4080.

Mine only loses about 5% performance at these settings so yeah it'll still be quite a bit faster than a 4080.
