Plex announces Plex Pass price increase and paywall for remote streaming - 9to5Mac

Now I will not be able to stream my own content from my NAS to my parents' house or even my phone outside of my house for free. They are putting it behind a paywall starting next month. Plex is officially dead to me and now I need to find alternatives.

Way bitd I set up hfs, https file server. I got to it by no-ip ddns duc, dynamic update client. The hfs would create hypertext links. I would text or email those if a browser wasnt immediatley available. And then, good old VLC or whatever media player was available. On my phone (FroYo!), i used an apk call yx player. It grabbed the link and played it.

Granted, most of the media I was streaming was from seed and leech system....I havent done that in over a decade, and I havent had the time to actually watch more than a couple movies or shows a year. And the kids dont give two shits about stuff outside Disney or Youtube.

Times have definitely changed, but a little work with the above tools will get you there.

So it will continue to stream within your own network correct? Assuming so then if you setup a VPN into your network you should be able to access it that way I would think.

Me too.

So far, I haven’t had any issues streaming outside my network. In the event my cable internet is down, my mobile internet kicks in. Due to the double NAT of the mobile gateway, I use TailScale VPN to make a virtual LAN so it appears as though all devices are on the same network.
