Ah, so gamers want 4K and high refresh rate and RT... no wonder that Nvidia is greedy with their prices when their buyers are just as greedy with their expectations of what a GPU should do.

It's equally tiring to listen to people saying "I just bought my GeForce 999900 RTGTX Super XL Pro for half a million bucks and that makes me so much better than all those dirty peasants who don't have money to run Portal RT at 8K!" ;)
All the 120hz+ 4k gaming screens that we've seen lately are selling that dream, AMD also marketed RDNA 3 that way, and DP 2.1 is going to take the rich to the next level. Realistically, most of us won't even need DP 2.1 until 2028, but that won't prevent Nvidia/AMD from using it in their gaming marketing :D

Finally tried the Portal with RTX yesterday, in 4K, couldn't get the Afterburner FPS dial to show.

But on my RTX 3080 even with DLSS turned on to Performance I only got about 30 FPS in first almost empty rooms. Didn't have time to play with it more.

With my blazing fast RTX 2060 and 12400f setup (/s), I was averaging around 18-24 FPS when I downloaded and played Portal RTX. To be honest I was expecting it to be completely unplayable with me getting 4-5 FPS. I already have all the achievements done for the original Portal version and played it hundreds of times over so I probably won't be seeing myself play it again until I get a GPU upgrade in the future.

Here is a comparison video that was recently released.

Nothing in that video justifies a 10 year old game running so slowly on anything but the highest end of hardware, when the OG game runs on a figurative potato.

I'd bet someone could mod shaders to produce 99% of those lighting effects while keeping it playable on a 1050.

Yeah, they obviously have no obligation to optimize a game for their competitor, but this just reinforces the notion that game studios aren’t going to take in much help from NVIDIA to RT-optimize a title, especially since they want their games to run on AMD-powered PS and Xbox. We will continue to see rehashed oldies optimized for RTX, while everything else just gets a passing fancy at RT. This demo just shows how costly a full RT implementation is!

Side note, Portal is a good game because it was fun to play with a good story. It never was played for the graphics. Making it look more modern might be appreciated, but like it’s been said, one can update the texture packs and get much of the same look and feel.

Yeah I found the game to run okay on my 3080, but equally I'm not stupid enough to try and run it at 4K either. I just went with 1080P and DLSS balanced and off I went... good times.

Besides have AMD even acknowledged this free DLC in their drivers? It's Vulkan after all, and I've found it fun to play with, people are experimenting with settings and still getting great results on lesser hardware:

I like the fact people have even imported Half-Life 2 maps to great effect:

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
The performance makes no sense. In every other raytraced game, the 6900XT equals 3070, and here it's 8x slower? Seems like nvidia did everything in their power to make this a clown show just to demonstrate their superiority.
I don’t think it has enough tessellated concrete barriers or oceans you can’t see…..

I see benefits to RT but also a lot of overblown effects like Bloom and HDR caused on some games when they first came out too. See Half Life 2: Lost Coast. Funny how Nvidia had such issues with that and they had a performance loss when forced to use true color due to shortcuts in the pipeline…..

So much meltdowns over a game LOL, I just finished Portal RTX in 2.6 hours, looks great for "modded" 15 year old game, even better some modern days AAA games

Unfortunally Portal and Half Life games have a terrible bob effect and I get headache and motion sickness after few minutes of playing. I never finished them. :(
The devs know the problem, but never fixed it. However, there is lot of people who play these fine: probably the different eyesight of each one plays a role in this, just like with VR headsets; mine isn't perfect.
L4D, Team Fortress and Insurgency 2014 are made with the same engine, but they don't seem to be affected by that. Or, if there is it, it's less evident.
Oh well, waiting for HL3 to fix it. :D Damn Valve!

Any chance for PCI-Express scaling benchmark?
My 3060 is on 3.0 x8 because this old mobo can't handle both NVMe and x16.

I find higher FOV reduce or even completely eliminate motion sickness, minimum FOV for me is 90

I had the same problem... couldn't play them until I decided to stick on my montitor 5 little pieces of adesive paper ripped off from a post-it (four to form a square and one at the center).
If your brain is able to understand that you are not actually moving you won't suffer from motion sickness, this is the reason why I needed 5 fixed points on my monitor ;)

I think if you spent up to $1500 bucks on a 6900XT you have been robbed, remember ladies... more VRAM isn't a feature.
And that's because it doesn't run an Nvidia tech-demo? :wtf: I agree with the $1500 part (I would never pay that much for any GPU, but that's a different story).

It's a half-baked implementation of ray tracing just to give nvidiots another excuse to not feel bad for having spent thousands on half-baked next generation graphics cards. :D

Not really, because I'm not the one upset about that.

When did you see me cry? I honestly can't give a rat's arse about Nvidia's new PR material. I just want to know what makes it run so badly on AMD cards because I'm curious. Is there something wrong with that?

Not yet, but recently they released a driver that improved OpenGL performance in their professional gpus, after many many years of wait. So, don't give up: eventually they will adjust their drivers for Portal RTX. :D :D |joking, don't shoot me|

Hey at least you get a free digital 4090 at the start of the game for maximum triggering efficiency.

Is it really a 10 year old game with new models and textures? Is it? Its a remake. The smart people said it has to do with the number of rays. Either way, its a monumental improvement...imo.
