Powering a low power GPU with a molex daptor to 8 pin or simular?

So here is a question about alternative powering a lower powered gpu with a 8 pin connector needed.

Problem short: I all ready have a RTX 4090 that takes up all the GPU dedicated 6/8 pins connectors my PSU have aviable, so for my seceondary system i use a pcie slot powered only card in form of a RTX A2000. 1 PSU powers two systems, just to avoid confusion.

However i just stumpeled over this little new soon upcomming RTX 4060 with SFF cooler from Gigabyte. Problem is, it needs a 8 pin gpu connector to power it and i do not have more aviable.


So simply put, does any one here on TPU know a good and reliable way of powering a GPU with alternative connectors. Like Molex to 8 pin adaptor or sata to 8 and so on, that is also safe.
I don´t want melting connectors or fire hazards in my pc. So does any one know a good and safe solution?

Very nice PSU! I think you can try a 6-pin to 8-pin connector / adapter. Don't think there's going to be fire hazard: worst case, system will reboot / shutdown because of power not being delivered.
The 4060 does draw a bit more power than the A2000.

I think you mis understand. All aviable 6 and 8 pins are all in use. Thats why i need another option like molex to 8 pin or simular.

Dark Hero is 4+8pins and you have 1 split cables on the CPU side 3 cables, 4 connectors for CPU1 and CPU2. Use the split cable on CPU1 the 5950X is 200W must suffice.
CPU2 will be freed for the 4060 but you need to buy new cable as the ones that 4090 is using 4 cables, 8 connectors just for itself.

Dark Hero is 4+8pins and you have 1 split cables on the CPU side 3 cables, 4 connectors for CPU1 and CPU2. Use the split cable on CPU1 the 5950X is 200W must suffice.

Hmm yeah that could might work. I all ready use a cablemod connector for my RTX 4090. So i can might reuse the original 8 pins cable. If not, i must go buy a sutable cable.

In TPU's testing the RTX4060 spikes to 160 W, so in theory you should be able to power it with a 2x molex to 8-pin adapter. 1 molex provides 54 W, so the card would be getting up to 108 W through the PCIe connector, and should be able to pull the remaining power from the 75 W PCIe slot.

These are only calculations, and I have no way to verify it in practice.

hmm yeah. That sounds about right.

I am considering contacting the PSU provider directly and ask if they know molex or sata can handle a small GPU.

Aren't those included anymore. there is always this dual molex connector to 6 or 8 pin in the box. providing only 1 12V per molex cable, so if there is a melting point that is probably it.

Get a second PSU. You don't want to do molex to 6pin because that will be a lot of amps for a single 12v pin.

Ketchup and mustard cable goes into separate Molex on the PSU, not on the same and then you have 2 separate 12V pins, and you can even roll your own adapter with 3 separate pins out of two adapters.

Absolute safest way:
adapt an unused EPS (8-pin CPU).

What @N/A said would work as well.
I don't shy from molex-6pin as long as the molex plugs are from 2 separate leads.

PCIe 6 pin only has 2 hot conductors, and 2 grounds, the other 2 hot/gnd are not specced for current, and cards aren't allowed to use them.
So, 2 grounds, 2 hots, and you're using the same as a real 6-pin. (A 4-pin +12v CPU plug can be adapted to a 6-pin, also)

2 molex to an 8-pin is 'pushing it'. Even A properly wired adapter will have 4 grounds and only 2 hots.

Going for a molex adaptor is a little bit kamikaze. Not recommended, yet you can still do it and above 98% chance not face any trouble whatsoever if it's two molexes and they're connected as tightly as it gets.

Decapitating the unused 8-pin CPU power connector and giving it a new life with an 8-pin PCI-E header is the most reasonable way to do it. Just don't mess polarities up. Do not use adapters, resolder it. The less chain is daisy the less is chance of KCASsing everything out.

I have used the ones from Amazon without issue, but these were used with low wattage cards (100W to 150W). The dual SATA or Molex cables will only supply 125 watts max before they melt, this why I like the CPU to GPU PCIE cables like this one....

If you do not have a spire CPU connection, they do make Y cables....

If you do go with the SATA or Molex type, make sure they have two SATA or Molex connectors to power the one PCIE connector.

I am not sure if it is included with this particular card. It's so new it's not even up gigabytes homepage yet.

Get a second PSU. You don't want to do molex to 6pin because that will be a lot of amps for a single 12v pin.
That is not an option. No place for it.

4090 do need all 4 connectors to safely run at full throttle. 1 8 pin is rated for 150 watts max. Stock it's up to 450 watt and when power target is at max it's up to 600 watt it's alowed to pull. So 4 x 8 pins at 150 watt = 600 watt + 75 watt from pcie. But that with only 3 8 pins that still only 525 watt while the card can pull up 600 watt. So with only 3 8 pins in use, that would take up 75 watt over it's rated max capacity. So in short, yes 4090 need all 4 8 pin when Goin all out.

Also a side note. I can people talk about 6 pin. That would not work as the 4060 I'm looking at use 1 8 pin. 4060 is a 115 watt rated card, but a bit higher when overclock and power target raised to it's max.

Does your 4090 have a 12vhpwr port? Your Gigabyte Gaming 4090 should have one.

If so, you could just buy one on those PCI-e 5.0 power supplies (which may be good for future proofing) and you'll have plenty of 8 pins for 4060 as well.
