R5 5625U Laptop Undervolt

Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire 7 A715-43G R233 equipped with a Ryzen 5 5625U and an RTX 3050 (60W). I've been using it for 2 years, but for the past month, I’ve been experiencing a thermal bottleneck issue.

Even on the game’s loading screen, my CPU reaches 99°C. It attempts to draw 20W, and I tried setting it to 13W using AMD APU Tuning Utility. This worked yesterday, but now the settings aren’t being saved or maintained; even after reapplying them, the CPU still tries to draw 20W, heats up, then drops to around 4W and this cycle repeats continuously.

My BIOS is updated, drivers are up to date, all power settings are set to performance mode, and I keep the laptop clean. I know the cooling isn’t ideal, but there’s no issue with airflow. I replaced the thermal pads last week with Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8, though it doesn’t seem to be sufficient. I have also ordered a PTM7950 and am waiting for it.

Does anyone know how to make undervolt settings permanent? Any help would be appreciated.

Additionally, the AMD APU Tuning Utility indicates that the settings are applied, but they aren’t taking effect. When I tried using Ryzen Controller, it reported “unable to apply,” and ThrottleStop shows a system incompatibility error and won’t work.

Yes those utilies don't work anymore with Windows 11 blocking them even with process whitelist. I would suggest using balanced mode since OEM's performance mode push TDP past 55W and CPU temps reached 110C even on gallium/graphite thermal pad on thinkpad with 5875u

I don't really understand. The GPU has 60W, and the CPU is supposed to have around 15W TDP, but it's trying to draw 20W sometimes even 25W or reaching 30W. Yesterday, I tried using APU Tuning Utility, and it worked perfectly for a 3-hour period, never exceeding 14W.

I don’t want to wait for a 50-series laptop, but I’m really struggling with my budget to buy a new one. I guess I’m stuck with this garbage. It worked almost perfectly fine for 1.5 years, then suddenly died.

Tried BIOS update? For me uninstalling and blocking Lenovo Power and Battery driver made the CPU consume the rated TDP of 15W on sustained and 20W on peak workloads while bringing temps down from 99C to 60C

One of the first things I tried was updating the BIOS, but the last update is from about 1.5 years ago. I had hoped it would help, but it just didn’t work. Also, the BIOS settings have almost zero options to change.

I checked the manufacturer's website again to download all the latest drivers—thanks for the help, by the way—but unfortunately, none of them are actually new. Even the most recent one is at least two years old, all from 2022.

I have no idea what happened to this laptop. I used it without any issues for 1.5 years, and now it's suddenly in this state.

Yep during a 5-minute Battlefield 1 session, I monitored performance using Afterburner. In my country, the price difference between good and bad products just isn’t worth it. For example, the Legion 5 Pro (14900HX, 4070) costs $2,300, while the Legion 7 Pro (13900HX, 4090) is $3,500. Pricing makes no sense anymore, and stock availability isn’t much different from the rest of the world. Once I sort out my budget, I’ll probably just grab whatever I can find. Looks like this laptop has reached the end of its lifespan.

I’ve updated all the drivers provided by the manufacturer, got some help from GPT, and did everything I could to lower temperatures. As a last resort, I’ll probably take it to a technician. I just can’t keep troubleshooting any longer.

Tried generic drivers from AMD? If not, Try the web installer. There are lot of fixes for power management, tpm.
Maybe thermal paste has gone bad and you can switch to phase change pad or kryoaheet. Then again newer laptop might fix inadequate cooling and performance you require.

If all those don't work then try disabling turbo boost in windows power settings, just remember to enable it for general use if you are doing CPU intensive work.

@706143 I'm not sure my custom power plan I use for 8840HS will help you. I disabled turbo boost in battery mode using PowerSettings explorer. You can download the custom plans through my github

Win 11 resets the power plan upon reboot so you need to re-run import power settings xml file when it switches to battery.

@vgm I really appreciate that, thank you, but I guess I fixed it using UXTU. Of course, I disabled turbo boost and set the CPU power limit to 25%. Even at 25% usage, it was trying to draw 20W of power, so using UXTU I fixed it at 14W. It seems to be working, but time will tell. The only problem is that now the GPU is limited to 50W, but it's okay it doesn't bother me since I can get around 90 FPS average in BF1.

Now I have another problem besides the laptop's software issues. I recently bought a Philips Evnia 27" 1080p 180Hz monitor. I've been using it for about a month, and suddenly a ghosting problem occurred that is so bad it's not usable anymore. I'm trying to return it wish me luck.
