R9 290 Crossfire

Well, I made this thread for everyone, not only for my case.

Anyway, I'm getting a buddy for my Asus R9 290 next week (XFX R9 290 DD), is it still that I just install the second card (and of course the power cables) and it just works? At least when I had HD 5870 CF back in the day, it was that easy.

I just hope that 750W is enough, just bought this PSU few weeks ago

Assuming average power consumption 250-300W per card under load like modern games i think you need 1000W PSU.

Yes it should detect the card and possibly require one restart to get it all synced up in Crossfire. 750W should be enough if you aren't pushing crazy overclocks on both cards. I ran into power issues on my 760W with 2x R9 290X and an FX-8350 @ 5.2GHz back in the day, but with Ryzen you'll be using probably about 100W less than I was. I'd expect you'll still be in the upper 650W range with that spec.

e: This is watercooled, that XFX card will be on air for a while since I'm hella poor, can't get anything at once..

e: -100mV was too much, let's try 1100/1333 -50mV with power target +50%...

my old 290x CFX and Phenom 2 x6 and 8370E used a 750w Corsair for years .

I've killed a 500w by running Prime95 and Furmark at the same time on i7 920 and r9 290.
It took around 5 min to kill it dead.
Yeah I agree, 750W will be pushed hard.
And depending on how old and good that PSU is it might have the same faith as my 500W PSU.
And I have two machines at home with RX580 and RX570 in CF, not a lot games have good CF support.
I still prefer my GTX 1070 rig over the ones with CF.

Hows your ventilation, looks like your bottom card taking a lot of heat from the top card, fix that problem with my system ,by adding a side panel fan sucking the heat from both cards, use a custom fan curve, MSI AB or some third party software.

81C max on the lower (air cooled) card. Not bad IMO.

that's a much better score than the Gigabyte™ Radeon™ R9 280 Windforce Crossfire™ I had, paired with a AMD™ Ryzen 7 1700, 13699 was its best score on 3D Mark™ fire strike.
I upped it about to a MSI™ Radeon™ RX Vega 56 Crossfire™ and its best so far is 23728.
