R9 290 with Samsung ram?

I just bought a used r9 290 off Ebay for my backup pc. After replacing the thermal paste it doesn't go above 78C and it overclocks pretty good too.

But anyways, I was on gpu-z the other day and I noticed the gddr5 ram is made by Samsung. Everywhere I look I only see information about Hynix and Elpida ram, nothing about Samsung. Did I receive some super rare model or am I just not looking in the correct places?

Brands are interchangeable, provided the specs are similar. You can find just about any brand, on just about any card. Nothing rare or remarkable about it really. I mean, there might(or might not) be less of those particular cards with Samsung. But it doesn't really mean anything. Other than that's probably what they had on hand the day the card was made.

What kind of info are you looking for?

Not sure about the 290 in question though Samsung, Hynix, Micron and Elpida are the biggest players in the vram market (probably the only players, can't seem to think of another off the top of my head) and many cards have variants with multiple vram manufacturers even for the same GPU, so is it a surprise to see your vram mfr is Samsung? I would say no unless they didnt supply vram for many 290's not sure if that's the case though.

Edit: just having a very quick look at powercolor 290's there are quite a lot with Samsung vram

It was to my understanding that Samsung was not used for the 290/290x's. Rather they went Elpida and Hynix. A lot of my friends have these gpu's (I bought a 980ti to show them up lol) and none of them have Samsung.

As I linked above (edited) if you look at the powercolor bios' quite a few have the option for Samsung vram you could probably dig deeper by dropping powercolor and looking at all AIB 290's but I'll leave that up to you, I am not going to do that though lol

White stickers?

I also had Samsung on my old VaporX 290X.

I find it interesting how it's like this. I found this out a few years back when I bought two R9 270x cards to put in Crossfire. Both the exact same model by MSI and everything seemed identical about the two cards. Then I noticed the temps were quite a lot higher on the top card. After some probing I found that one was using Elpida, and the other Hynix. Turned out one (can't remember which) was notorious for running hotter than the other, and this was the one I had running as the top card. This was therefore exaggerated by the fact the card was on top (top card always hotter because of less airflow). I ended up swapping the cards and everything more or less evened out with the temperatures.

IIRC Elpidas were the worst and I have a Asus R9 290 DCUII OC with Elpidas, clocks ok with a waterblock.
