I've got several old, smallish GB SSDs lying around that I'd like to do something with. In the past, I've used RAID 0 to make one larger drive from 2 smaller drives. But another thought came to mind. So I thought I'd ask before I waste time trying to do it. Btw, this is for working with older legacy machines.

Say I have 2 x 120GB SSDs that I can combine into 1 x 240 GB drive using RAID 0. Now... (after a reboot) can I take a 240 GB drive and Raid 0 that drive with the newly-minted "240 GB" drive to make a 480 GB drive? I'm guessing the RAID setup won't allow that.

You can't*.
When RAID0 is created, it doesn't allow adding more drives to it after it was created (it's inflexible that way).
To do this properly, you would have to copy/move RAID0 data somewhere else, delete RAID0 array, reconfigure with more drives, and copy data over again.

*Unless you have ZFS NAS thing :D

Are you talking about a real raid controller or about fake raid controller?

I would look into software solution / operating system solutions. I'm kinda sure I could use LVM2 and later grow the filesystem. Assuming I did not encrypt the storage. On the other hand I would dynamically link the space somewhere. I did that with the downloads, which gets checked anyway by the software for the checksum, on my unreliable old HDD.

Thanks folks. Not going to take it any further, tho.
