Replacing SSD - best practice?

Hi,

System storage: 500GB NVME
Secondary storage: 500GB SATA SSD

Running low on space, I'm looking to swap out my secondary storage to 2TB SATA SSD. It holds a couple of games, x2 local cloud storage and some other media.

What is the best method to transfer all data to the new drive without running into problems? Once done, i hope its as easy as removing the old and adding the new as plug and play without causing issues at the directory level.

You should already be doing this just restore a system image to the new ssd
If not never to late to start.

For a non-system secondary drive, would you recommend using the cloning or disk imaging feature?

Also what is the benefit of disk imaging over cloning for a SSD swap?

Sorry im full of questions... I usually backup all my files/media using Cobian on a weekly basis (incremental) and monthly (Full). I don't usually mind having to re-install windows and applications... but I admit cloning/imaging definitely has some major advantages especially for unexpected problems. How often do you image/clone?

With that amount of data (500GB or thereabouts) I would just use windows copy function, label the new drive with the drive letter the old drive had & your done! or you could keep the old drive as additional storage, your call though.
I did that recently with nearly about the same about of data you have (steam games) just last week. Easy peasy!
As a general rule, I always try not to complicate systems with 3rd party apps whenever I can for tasks like this.

The nvme will remain the os drive from what I can gather and he wants to replace the 500gb game/storage drive with a 2tb one

Agreed with the other comment above, just copy the contents over using Windows, shouldn't be too hard, format the 500gb SSD when done and enjoy your upgraded storage

I think we may be coming up with too many solutions for the poor guy/girl/car

On to how you're connecting it, assuming you arent out of SATA ports or something, change the existing drives letter (from say, D to Z), initiliase and format the new one and label it the old letter (in this example, D)

Copy the files over, and everything 'just works'
You can then decide what to do with the 500GB drive, plenty of good options to do with a 500GB SSD (from more storage to a dedicated steam library drive, to a high speed USB external)

Little short but it should work.
(It only works for SSD's though, not for 3,5" HDD's.)

I'm running both. The NVME is the system drive (OS, applications, active projects, etc) and doesn't really exceed 80% capacity. It's the secondary storage (SATA SSD) running out of space... i've got a 3TB TOSH P300 HD too where I'm having to shift a bunch of stuff but I prefer keeping that for backups only.

Apologies for noooobiness.... i was under the impression for things to resume as normal I needed to clone the drive. I have applications running in C drive (primary storage) with root folders saved in D drive (secondary storage)... primarily cloud storage local backups, game library, etc. If I just copy and paste everything with the drive letter change method, will everything resume as normal? What about hidden files... should I be copying those over too?

Honestly, ive been buying too much tech stuff since the lockdown... just bought a pricey LG GRAM 17 laptop, a bunch of peripherals and accessories. Can't be spending more for cool tech unless the use-case makes a stronger case for it (i've book marked it ... yep i get like that lol).

Monthly is the goal but I have slacked to two months on more than one occasion on just my rigs

But next time you clean install start imaging it can save you lots of work.

I'd add you can mount a system image and copy a single file or many files off the image.
Then just unmount.

Check the alignment first, make sure its proper for an SSD.

If the alignment is good and filesystem is 4k cluster size, then do an image backup/restore.

If the alignment isnt right or you have smaller cluster size, then do a file and folder macrium backup, manually make the partition on new SSD in windows and 4k cluster size on NTFS, then restore the files, macrium preserves permissions.

Not really, end user can change those too. Just change them to something like Z or whatever for temporary, when windows returns the drive letter the end user wants, swap it back & then done. Easy peasy!

Mount as in open the image using M-reflect to access individual files/folders? If correct, i didn't know that was possible and solves a bunch of workarounds.

ok i've been looking into these and i;ve had a change of heart. So these double up as external storage too? I was meaning to get some external enclosure for my 3.5" HD when upgrading my build to a mini-ITX (NR200P)... swapping over when Zen 4/DDR5 hits the shelves. If this can do that.... problem solved... cloning/imaging/ext HD-SSD support in one.

many of those external cloning devices clone the filesystem exactly, which i dislike - you can get things like partitions that arent aligned correctly, the wrong size for new drives, and so on

The only other negative is that with a single USB 3.0 connection you're slower than an SSD, so if you use one with multiple drives you're going to be a lot slower than internally
They're also louder than internally, with mech drives - but if you're just after an easy hotswap for temporary use, they do the job

@wheresmycar to be on the safe side if you not sure, I would use free macrium, do a file and folder backup of everything on the drive.

Then when the new SSD is in, format it using windows, that will ensure everything is proper, use the default cluster size, then restore the backup to it. This also has the benefit you will have a clean optimised MFT.

Well, they can, yes. All of thems should have a switch that allows you to do PC mode or cloning.

All of those are random xinese brands, except maybe the Wavlink. Don't expect any support.

Hi,
Reflect adds a context menu to mount an image if you right click on one so you can use windows explorer to read the image like any other disk/ folder.
But yes it makes it possible to undo issues without restoring the entire image.

This, exactly.
It doesn't sound like there are any system or protected OS files on the SATA drive, just copy it over and swap the drive letters so applications don't moan about the folder paths changing.
I use imaging tools extensively for work and there's zero need to touch them unless you have a good reason to - ie, a simply copy or move function won't do the job.

Clones can be hit or miss plus only good for the chore at hand
System images can be reused many times.

Only reason to clone is if you don't have another disk to create or store a system image on
Clonezilla in this case although reflect can clone it's way better at system images.
