RTX 2060 super hot spot 105c while gpu temp is 70c

Hi guys. I have problem with my RTX 2060 super graphic cards. So for over month my fans were going crazy to 100% randomly for 1 second. I was worried so i checked my gpu temperature which was fine. Then my friend told me to check my hot spot gpu temperature. While gaming it is always 100 - 106c. I noticed that my fans are going to 3500 rpm speed while hotspot reaches 106.5 c. I cleaned my pc but it didn't help. So I decided to wonload msi afterburner and set my fans to 100% while my gpu reaches 65 c (only for test to check if I can somehow get rid of this temperature). That didn't help.

So this are results:
IDLE:
gpu 50 - 60
hotsport 70 - 80

Without msi afterburner:
gpu 76 (can't reach more temp)
cpu temp: 70 - 76
fans: 2000 - 2800 rpm (depends on temperature)
hotspot 100 - 106c

with msi afterburner (100% for whole time gaming)
fans: 3500 rpm
gpu 68 - 72 (so I am sure that fans are working)
cpu 70 - 76
hotspot: 100 - 105c

So fans decreased my gpu temp but hotspot is still high (actually on 3500rpm hotspot max was 105c never goes above to 106 like in default settings).

Game I was playing is Witcher 3 on high settings if this makes any changes. However on fifa 22 with 50-60 % usage of gpu my hot spot is between 95 - 100c with temp 65

Yeah thats how I thought. For now I undervolt my gpu to 80% and hotspot is between 90 - 96 with 68 gpu temp. Thanks for the advice!

I always try keeping my GPU temp below 70C, I don't look much at the "Hot Spot" though.
I think since the "Hot Spot" temp sensor has been added to GPU-Z more people start to worry, not sure if it's a thing to really worry about.

Yeah I didn't know about it. I updated my gpu and saw hot spot on 105c constant while playing. On forums people are saying that everything above 100c is bad. I am just worried that it can damage my gpu. Idk how long I am playing games with this high temp of hotspot (I think since 1 month cause then I first time heard my fans going crazy). And I have no idea if this can damage my gpu. I read also that dangerous temp for hot spot is about 125 not 105 but I don't know what to think about it.

Have you repasted it recently ? It sounds like the paste might not cover the entire die, I'd take it apart, put new paste and make sure to spread the paste on 100% of the die and the heatsink screws applies equal pressure on all corners. There shouldn't be more than 10-15C difference between hotspot and GPU temp, 30C+ difference suggest some parts of the chip might not be in proper contact with the heatsink.

No where specifically, the GPU has multiple sensors, "hotspot" just means the one that reads the highest temperature.

Since when did "hotspot" temp sensor popup.
Years back no one was talking or worrying about it...

Because only in the last few years Nvidia made these sensors readable by third party software or rather they just weren't documenting their presence.

The PC did a normal startup after that.

Is a 105 degrees hotspot known for having issues?

I would use a set/max. voltage on f/v curve (0.95V for example), instead of slider.
30C difference between hot spot and GPU temp is pretty big. Here's a GTX 1080 Founders for comparison (similar TDP card, but with UC/UV) :

I do agree that's a quite high idle temp though, it must be a hot ambient temp where you live and your case may not have proper airflow.
My 2070 super idling around 30s C with a video playing on the desktop(wallpaper engine).
And oh, it's summer here.

Weird that your max GPU temp is 76 degrees, isn't that bad knowing that it 50~60 idles.


Just tested myself, my hotspot temp is about 15.6 degrees higher than my actual GPU temp.
Your hotspot temp is 32.4 degrees higher than your GPU temp!

For how long do you own this GPU?
Did you buy it new?
How were the temps when you just bought it?

If I would think that isn't true I wouldn't ask here for advice. I read on forum that hot spot safe temp is around 115 - 125 c. Just want to ask...

I didn't but def will do it.

I guess it is because I am using default fan curve. Fans are starting to work at 60c for a second and temp is going back to 55c.

Right, I don't use that, I have made my own fan curve, it's always spinning....


I wonder if anyone knows exactly how hot is too hot with this hotspot temp, the GPU seems to run it's games fine.
Your GPU temp isn't the worst at 76 degrees and gaming seems fine as you are not complaining about that.

@mainexe what GPU brand/model do you have?

As someone mentioned maybe it's worth it to repaste.
