Hello, this is my first GPU and right off the start of Windows it showed some checkerboard glitch, it froze then resumed with an error message.

The GPU
A 2nd hand GPU that I've bought very cheap, so returning will give me more trouble than not. But it's also my first GPU and I want it to work so badly because I've waited so much for it.

The Glitch
When I try to open a game like Mario Kart 8 on CEMU it glitches with this pattern, freezes and black screen then resumes, but sometimes it turns off completely so I have to restart my computer. But it also happens when I'm browsing Windows Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. It happens to a lot of people but I couldn't find any solution online because most people returned the glitchy card, but I can't return it because I've bought it from a "friend".

The Bios is was sus
I have seen a lot of glitch related issues because of modded mining BIOS, so I've researched how to identify the BIOS and flash it. But after comparing the BIOS that's on my RX 570 with the BIOS on Techpowerup database I'm not sure if would work because they look slightly different. I don't know if they are different because modded or different hardware, or both.

The verified BIOS on the database was not my GPU correct BIOS, that's why they had different values. (Still not sure if I should flash it or not)

The Memory Clock (aparent) Solution
When I watch Sensors on GPU-Z is shows Memory Clock stuck at 300MHz no matter what, even when I open Mario Kart it doesn't move (but also glitches and freezes). I've found this youtube video proposing to set the Memory Clock to 1750 min AND max. This actually stopped the glitch when I try to open Mario Kart 8 on CEMU for example. No glitches so far with this configuration.

What I've tried to do to solve the problem

  • Clean install of the driver using DDU on Safe mode
  • Tried a bunch of different driver versions
  • Removed the GPU, cleaned the contacts
  • Changed the DUAL BIOS Switch
What I need help with
  • Is it safe to let my GPU with the Memory Clock set to 1750 Min and Max? Should I put it lower and higher?
  • Should I flash the BIOS with the one from this database? Is my BIOS modded? Why is my BIOS values different from the Techpowerup BIOS?
    • In case flashing the Bios is the right choice, should I let the memory clock tuned? Because on the guide it says "NEVER FLASH OVERCLOCKED!" but my GPU is freezing without the overclocked Memory! What if it freezes on flashing process?
Thanks in advance, I've been up all night since yesterday when the GPU arrived, I've installed it and got so excited but then the glitch started and ever since I've been on a mission to make it work to not return it. I was hopeless yesterday but after the Corrupted Bios theory and the Memory overclock solution appeared I think it might work?

The solution
The GPU I have bought had a modded BIOS, that's why I had problems with Memory Clock and such. I flashed it with the verified XFX BIOS from here using a prompt Command and now the card is well.
I've followed the instructions on this video. So if you have the checkerboard diagonal glitch with RX570 that's probably a Bad Bios in it.

Hi and welcome. It looks like you are comparing the wrong Bios from our database to your card, can you post a GPU-Z screenshot of your card please.

So this is an exact copy of your existing Bios for your card with Hynix memory...……………...

1244/1750 are the correct clocks

There are other versions of your card with the same device ID's but they have either Elphida or Samsung memory, under no circumstances should these be used.

Thanks for that.

So this is what I got: my BIOS isn't modded, because it's identical configuration to that one you've posted, and I'll leave it alone.

I'll let the VRAM Clock tuning at 1750 at all times (because it's working) but is it safe? I've a lot of people saying it's okay, when idle, to have VRAM Clock at 300MHz.

My question is: leaving at 1750Mhz min/max will explode my computer? lol

I finally solved it, it was a modded BIOS and I flashed with the verified BIOS on TechpowerUp database and now the Memory Clock is okay. The Fans were turned off but I tuned them on with AMD Software.

I've flashed it with verified BIOS from the TPU database, with Elpida memory, now it's running correctly. Thank you!

Right, so it was flashed previously with the wrong Bios, hence why it was showing Hynix....... good result!
