I have a Tyan K8HM S3892 mobo with 2 AMD Opteron 285 processors and 32 GB DDR3 ram (I use PAE to access all of the RAM in 32 bit Windows). I replaced the Radeon HD4670 video card with a Biostar RX580. Since Windows 10 x64 does not support these processors, I installed Windows 10 x86 to run as a dual boot with Win 7 x64.

The last 32 bit driver that AMD made is the 18.9.3. I cannot install it. I get the following message:
1609647593753.png

I tried to install 17.7.2, it appeared to install but, every time I checked Device Manager, the only driver was Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Windows Experience Index rated my new card at a sizzling 2.0 on both Video ratings.

I am open to suggestions as to what I should do to get some sort of native driver to install.

Thank you.

try going to device manager and manually installing the driver. just right click the basic "display adapter", then select "Browse my computer for drivers", then select " let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer", select "Browse", navigate to "C:\AMD\YOUR DOWNLOADED DRIVER VERSION HERE\Packages\Drivers\Display\32bit folder" and select any .inf file. the drivers should install. sense you ran the package the driver files should be on your c: drive.

good luck.

Final_Fighter, thanks for taking the time to respond. I should have mentioned that I did try that and only got the "Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. ..." message.

Any other thoughts?

Good morning. This is the same kind of card that the thread at this link AMD RX580 corrupted Windows 10 installation | TechPowerUp Forums (pictures there) discusses - by the way, I am updating and will soon post the guide kindly provided by Riknor on that issue. The motherboard (from 2006) is non-UEFI so no CSM option in BIOS as far as I can tell.

Again, thanks for taking the time to help out.

Hello again,

In reviewing the thread referenced above, a couple of the posters made a note that newer cards have an UEFI BIOS and the mobo needs an UEFI BIOS as well. Assuming that this is what is preventing the driver from installing (recall, the card works, the native driver will just not install), am I SOL or is there some workaround to allow this card to be used with this mobo?

If the answer is nothing reasonable can be done to make this card work in this computer, can I have some suggestions as to what video cards have a BIOS that will work and that have higher specs than the HD4670 that I am looking to replace? I am not trying to make you do my work for me, I am happy to research this if there is somehow that I can tell if a card has a compatible BIOS.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

That is what I was alluding to, sorry I didn't explain further.
The RX 580 is incompatible due to the UEFI only Bios, even if you did find a Legacy Bios for it, you may have issues using 32 Bit Windows as most software is 64Bit.

PAE to access all of the RAM in 32 bit Windows

PAE has not affect on desktop versions of Windows. Even with PAE enabled, the 32-bit versions of desktop of Windows can only access a maximum of 4GB of RAM.

Good morning. Please see the threads at this site - PAE patch updated for Windows 10 – wj32 - to hack your kernel to enable PAE to allow 32 bit Windows 10 to see all of the RAM. I will send screen shot later (after I boot into PAE) with evidence that it works.

Caring1, thanks for your further message. I do appreciate the limitations of the 32 bit vs. 64 bit issue. However, most of what I used this computer for still has 32 bit software and I would be fine using old 32 bit drivers to run it when I do not boot into Win 7 x64.

Again, thanks.

I should note that if you want to use the wj32 hack, ensure that you find and download the PatchPAE3_2018_11_19.zip file (by Evgeny, I think). In there will be Patch PAE version 3 (the link at the top of the very long thread is to an old version) and there is a script in there to run under an elevated CMD prompt which will automate everything for you.

Please note that this will not work if your video is provided by the silicon in an Intel chip (i.e. will need a discrete video card) and, if you use an NVIDIA card, you will have to use an older driver or it will not work. I haven't read up on this in some time so please spend the necessary time to review the portions of the thread that apply to your setup.

Did you enable .NET 3.5 and earlier support ?
Also, try using the RX in the other PCI-e slot.

This is not what @newtekie1 meant when he mentioned PAE on Windows.
What he (and I here) are trying to say is that even if Windows can detect your 32 GB RAM, there are no known 32-bit software that can use more than 4 GB RAM, so for example if you ran an application such as browser or video games, those applications can't use up more than 4 GB RAM as that are how much they are programmed to be capable of using. With the advent of 64-bit computing and PAE being no longer the popular means of bypassing 32-bit limitation, software developer never even bothered to optimize their 32-bit software to take advantage of PAE (or even PSE-36).

The only way you are going to take advantage of your 32 GB RAM with PAE is if you multitask 7-8 different application running 4 GB RAM each. But if you only run one program at a time with the best case example being a browser or intensive video editing software and that single program wants more RAM, it would be unable to access more than 4 GB RAM unless you run a second instance of said browser or video editing software.

In fact, I think that this is the issue with your driver is here is that PAE. Some 32-bit software are incompatible with PAE enabled and in some cases won't detect your configuration as well. This could what is likely causing your AMD driver refusing to detect your config.

Just so you know, many 32-bit software can run on 64-bit Windows perfectly fine.

Hi,

Thanks for your thoughts. .Net 3.5 and earlier was enabled. I disabled and re-enabled to see if that would work. On 18.9.3, again the installer says not for my system, on 17.7.2, it installs without error but, when I check the driver in Device Manager, it is still the MS basic adapter. It's look like I need to go back to the drawing board, as it were.

This is not what @newtekie1 meant when he mentioned PAE on Windows.

Thanks for your input. As I mentioned in the original post, I have not enabled or used PAE when trying to install drivers and have been running only 4 GB of RAM on those occasions. I have the option to boot into the unmodified kernel or the PAE modified kernel.

Thanks again.

Good day and my apologies for the long silence. Work gets in the way of "fun".

In reviewing the messages in Events under Device Manager for the video card, I get the following:

Device PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_67DF&SUBSYS_0B311002&REV_E7\4&25121744&0&0040 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

Last Device Instance Id: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13C2&SUBSYS_39783842&REV_A1\4&15836924&0&0050

Status: 0xC0000719

It is like I need to hack the BIOS so that the card reports something recognizable to the driver package. Any thoughts folks?

Thanks in advance.

Interesting - Last Device Instance Id: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13C2&SUBSYS_39783842&REV_A1\4&15836924&0&0050

Vendor 10DE is Nvidia and, while I tried an NVidia card on this computer some months ago, it would not install and I used DDU in safe mode to remove both AMD (original card) and NVidia drivers.

I checked the Device ID on the other computer where the card (with Riknor's help) installed correctly and it is the same as note in my last post. That was a 64 bit driver though and, as I noted above, the processors in this computer do not support Windows 10 x64.

I would run DDU again but ... I am 2,000 miles away from this computer and am remoting in but would likely need to be at the console to start in Safe Mode again to re-run it so I'll have to wait until my next trip. Does any one have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The RX 580 is incompatible due to the UEFI only Bios, even if you did find a Legacy Bios for it, you may have issues using 32 Bit Windows as most software is 64Bit.

As Caring1 was trying to tell you, the RX580 has no support for motherboard with a legacy BIOS, such as yours.

As such, the video card will not work properly in that system.

Caring1 and Slizzo, thanks. Everything I read said that the computer will NOT boot if the video card is UEFI and the mobo is a legacy bios. Mine boots without issue other than the drivers from AMD will not load. Is your experience with a similar set-up no-booting or similar to mine, boot but with MS basic adapter drivers?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Didn't AMD announce they will not provide 32bit OS drivers many years ago
Yes, but the ones they did produce are still available.

You dont need the AMD drivers for that, the Windows drivers plenty adequate without distinction in performance. Finding and using 3rd-party custom drivers are a possibility, you might get lucky there but even then you wont see much performance difference from the current windows 32 bit drivers.

If this is one of those "See I got it to work" projects, I'm not impressed and can only say good luck.

Thanks for your response.

The Windows Basic Drivers seem to work for the basic uses I put them to. However, as noted above, I now get a Windows Experience Index of 2.0 on the 2 video scores so I assume that if I put the rig to some heavy work, there will be some degrading of performance. I attach the last WEI that I ran a month or so ago after I swapped video cards. The WEI video scores with the HD4650 were both 6.5 so I was looking to improve on that a bit - I was more interested in getting a card with more RAM as I tend to have a lot of browser tabs open and it was getting a bit slow switching between them.

This is definitely NOT a "See I got it to work" project. In an earlier post I asked if anyone could suggest a card (likely older) that would be the best I could get to work in this setup (better than the prior HD4650 that I had in there). I am working on a new build for my daughter and the RX580 or a GTX 970 that I am not currently using will go into the new build.

If it did not boot at all with the RX580, I would have ended this journey long ago - as I noted above, everything I read about this issue suggested that the effect of a non-UEFI on the motherboard resulted in non-booting, not in a failure to load the proper drivers.

Thanks again to all who offered assistance. Unless someone has another thought that I can try, or can suggest a card that does not need a mobo with UEFI and that will be a better performer than my HD4650, I think we can put a fork in this topic.

dont worry one bit about the windows experience rating at all. Its only there to fool users into thinking they need a better computer, its a huge farce. As long as the computer does what you intended it to do, nothing else matters.

Video memory has no bearing on how many tabs you may have open in a web browser. That has to do with system memory.
