Hello

We have a custom gaming PC since 2019, and our 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe2.0 SSD is just about full. Also have a slow external WD Elements drive for backup.

Motherboard: Asus Maximus Hero XI (WiFi) S/N- J8MCAJKK004FLYD (8/16/19)
Graphics: EVGA nVidia 2080ti (FTW3)
Memory- Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x8 GB) 3200 Mhz ver. 5.32
CPU: Intel i9-9900k
PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850
OS: Win 10 Pro
Phanteks case, Evolv X

Can this Asus MB run the Samsung 990 Pro (version without heatsink) 4 TB SSD? And is it possible to easily transfer over all data and programs from my current 1 TB C:/ drive to the new one?

Thanks for any help.

If the board has 2x m.2 slots then you can transfer from 1 NVMe drive to the other all the data.
But its not like a simple copy-paste process.

Samsung has a software specially for this.
Data Migration tool
I have used it a few years back to migrate win10 installation and everything else in the drive from a 970Pro 512GB to a 980PRo 1TB.
Then I swap the drives on m.2 slots and then quick format 970Pro clean. I still have them both and a couple of SATAIII ones

Yes, thanks Zach...

Since the post, I did find that Samsung Migration Tool and dl'd it. It still sounds like a scary process. I have another SSD in the second slot, a smaller Crucial MX500.

So, I remove that Crucial 1 TB from second drive, and then put my current main SSD, the Samsung 970 EVO into that second drive, and then place the new 4 TB Samsung 990 into the first slot... ?

So, I can transfer everything from the old drive to the new one, data, programs, and Win 10 Pro OS?

I wouldn't run that drive without some kind of cooling. You can grab a heatsink for like $10 and it's 100% worth it.

Hey Toothless...thx.

There are two models of the 990 Pro...
* The one I listed, without heatsink, size: max 80. X max 22. X max 2.3mm
* The 990 Pro w/ heatsink, size: max 80.15 X max 25. X max 8.88mm
* Size of my current 1 TB EVO (one that's nearly full)... max 80.15 X max 22.15 X max 8.88mm

Version with the heatsink is about @ $30 more... no problem. Looks like the version with heatsink will fit... correct?

Not scary at all
It doesnt actually taking the data from the initial drive
Just making a clone copy

Then you switch the drives and see if the "new" works as should, before you wipe the "old"

And yes you will remove the crucial drive.
You can install the new in its place and start the process.
After finished you can install the new drive to the first m.2 slot

A job is always easier when you have/use the correct tool(s) :D

Most drive mfgr's have their own utilities app to facilitate migrations, firmware updates ect, and they tend to work pretty well. I use WD drives & their utility app works well too.

It will be fine. You can get the one without the heatsink, slap one you want on there and save some cash.

The future suks wallah, trust me, I've been there, done that, and chose to come back to the present, even with all it's issues, it's still better than what I saw over there, hahahahaha :D
