SATA power for a video card

I have a PC with a proprietary 12V power supply and want to power the 6 pin connector of an Radeon R7 370 video card (the supply has no such connector); how much 12V power can I take from a SATA power connector?

I personally wouldn't trust these SATA to 6-pin adapters to be reliable, honestly. If I may ask, why an R7 370 specifically? Seems like such an odd choice for a video card you'd chuck on a PC with a low wattage PSU. Wouldn't it make more sense to grab say, an RX 6400 or 3050-6GB that runs off slot power for it?

Apparently 4.5 Watts is all that is drawn through but it might be up to 27 Watts.

250X is rated 80 W, 370 is rated 110 W, those extra 30 W are what this 6-pin presumably feeds. Might work with the SATA connectors but... seems super dodgy to me. idk I don't think i'd trust this so not that comfortable recommending it (speaking for myself, anyway) :confused:

Because that is what I found cheap ($35 in Goodwill), and is for when my Son visits from college, built from bits and pieces to stop him taking over my machine (he has a laptop). If I can pull it off for less than $10 that would be great; it already has a GT 1030 in it.

Seems to be 1.5A per pin, so maybe 108W with two connectors... might just work.

SATA to anything adapters are generally an ill-advised idea. That said, 6-pin PCI-e only has 2 'hots' specified; which, adapted off two separate PSU leads, would *probably* be perfectly fine.
The issue is 'trusting' the construction of the adapter, and the fact that Molex mechanically interfaces better than SATA (potential for a loose connection w/ bumping/moving PC)

This is all from retired parts and for short term use, but I'd still like it to work without damaging anything or wasting too much money.

I wonder how much comes from the connector and how much from the slot.

Theoretically, 75W comes from the slot, the balance from the PCI-e input. That's not really accurate though, and IIRC AMD cards have been accused of overdrawing on the slot.
If you have an amp meter or DC clamp meter, you should be able to test this yourself in a different machine.

The card is probably less than 110W in practice and since the dualie cable can carry 108W it should work with the slot helping.

Seems it might work and be worth getting (~$6). For a regular machine I'd not use such hacks.

If you'd have a hungrier card, I would say NO, but R7 370 isn't that hungry. Should work fine.

I got a cable to convert molex to PCIe, but only for my soundcard, I wouldnt use one of these things on a GPU personally.

The 1030 is a more suitable GPU for a system like this. It's also far better supported than the 370... which has been completely abandoned by AMD for a number of years now. so really, I wouldn't do it

I had a 1030 on my old 2nd PC few years ago and it was surprisingly good for an entry level card. Everyone just should remember to skip the DDR4 versions...

Yeah, this idea is stupid.

R7 370 has a little bit more horsepower, sure, but it's an obsolete mammoth. If you REALLY insist on using it you're better off finding an FSP PNR/PNF series PSU if it fits your case and call it a day.

Or... selling both 370 and 1030 and getting a 1650.

I'd offer to send you a PSU that you could use but I live in New Zealand it would cost more in postage than the PSU is worth surely someone in the states has an older unused 500W PSU sitting round that they don't need anymore that they could send you better that than use that silly SATA to 6pin that may not even work

The supply should have no problem with the extra load; it is a Core 2 Quad machine I just retired.

Run it and see, also 370 is supported in w11 via a driver from the amd site.

Then get PSU from a bigger system, which fits...

On my Dell T5500 with 0,85kW, I have put T7500 PSU with 1,1kW PSU...

Same thing can be made on HP machines...
