I agree that both are excellent. But you pay considerably more just because they are Platinum when all you get is a couple points better efficiency than a quality Gold unit - which already have excellent efficiency ratings. As seen here when you hover over the logos, at 50% load the difference between Gold and Platinum is just 2% (90% vs 92%). Unless you just happen to find the Platinum on a big discount sale, it would take years of use to make up the difference in purchase price with savings in energy costs.

It is critical to remember the 80 PLUS certifications are only about efficiency. There is nothing to suggest a Platinum will provide better performance, better ripple suppression, better regulation or a longer life span than a quality Gold.

For example, if you look at these two Seasonic 750W supplies. Both are excellent. But is the Platinum really worth $50 more? I say, "no way!"
