If you can feel a bump on the battery itself, I would get the battery replaced ASAP.
If you need to use the laptop and it can run off just the power supply/brick then disconnect the battery from the motherboard and carry on until a replacement arrive.
Always trust your eyes, touch when it comes to anything. The built-in indicator in the software or in bios wouldn't know if the battery is bulging as long as its "functional".

Yeah, no, that's not normal.
Took the words out of my mouth. That thing is about to enter Youtube shorts with title: HP laptop battery about to explode. :) I'd be extremely cautious around this thing.

Some swelling is normal. But this really seems excessive. Did it cause the deformation of the notebook's case?

So...my experience with their support assistant is that it can detect major issues...and that's about it. That's also only on relatively new hardware...as old stuff generally gets the "if it still works after a year it's fine" treatment.

You don't have usage data...but I'm assuming that the laptop has been in use for some time (and thus is out of warranty). I'd get that battery replaced ASAP, as they can take some gas-off but the level that this picture implies would lead me to call this an immediate risk.

I was going to say, right in time for the 4th of July fireworks.

Some swelling is normal.
Ummm, sorry but no! It is not normal. There should never be any swelling. Swelling typically indicates the battery got too hot - never good. Excessive heat could have come from outside source (laptop left in a hot car, for example) damaging the battery. Not good. Or an internal, partial short in the battery caused excessive current which typically increases heat. Also not good.

HP Support assistant app says my battery is normal
Let me guess - the laptop is still under warranty, right?

Get a bucket of sand and keep it somewhere where it can't do any harm. That thing might work, but this could go very wrong, VERY quickly. Imagine a jet of flame just because it got squished a little bit to much during transit. During the initial flames you'll be inhaling this lovely cocktail :)

"In thermal runaway and prior to ignition, LiBs produce a white vapour which consists of: hydrogen (ca. 30 – 50%), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, small droplets of the organic solvents, ethane, methane and other hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides."

Not good. Remove and replace. Put into into lidded but venting non-flammable container to transport to recycling/disposal facility in case it leaks or catches fire before you can get rid of it properly.

These apps, especially the ai assisted ones, are going to cause a lot of harm. Its an app, it can't possibly know anything about the battery swelling. It probably just knows basic information such as the expected lifespan, number of charges, and the production date.

woah, thats swelling at a pregnant-level. Pull it out ASAP and buy a replacement. Be careful not to put pressure on it and dispose of it properly (local recycling centers).

Years ago, I used to leave a spare laptop on charge 24/7 - big mistake. Eventually the battery fattened up (possibly high temps) and the cost for a genuine replacement from the manufacturer was ridiculously expensive. Learned my lesson the hard way. I was only glad to have identified the issue before things went to the next level (chemical leaks/fire/BOOM!). lol had a similar issue with one of those third party "extended battery" phone case solutions for an old Galaxy S2 phone. Imagine that one popping off in your trouser pocket - ouch!

HP Support assistant app says my battery is normal

The HP diagnostic tool doesn't detect pregnant batteries therefore unreliable.

I've had a few of those pouch style batteries swell and fail like that, their older style that was clipped in from externally were easier to swap, and safer.

No! Do not trust that opinion! Based on that photo, remove that battery from the laptop right this minute and take it to your local recycler ASAP! That battery is about to burst and could easily catch fire! Please, for your own safety, get that battery out of your house!
