Should I upgrade?

I have a Prime B66OM-A AC D4, I was wondering if I could upgrade from an i5 12th gen to an I7 14th gen. Also, I was wondering if the motherboard could potentially handle a 4070 on top of that.

In like 4 months? Sure. But imo right now is a terrible time to invest in a twilight platform. If you did want to do it, I would still do it later so you don’t have to pay today’s prices. If your ok with todays prices then just wait for the platform releases in the fall.

To add to the above, do assess the VRM on your mo-bo. I don’t think it will be an issue, but a 14700K (which is what I assume you are referring to) will draw more than the i5 (whichever you currently have). Shouldn’t be a problem, but it’s always good to double check. I am looking at the board now and the lack of VRM cooling doesn’t fill me with confidence.

no. don't upgrade
if you feel like you are CPU-bound...just game in 2k resolution. Then in most games the GPU will do all the work.

The only time you might feel like you need a strong CPU is in ray tracing... even then, just up the res and the graphics card will do the job

The "Prime" series motherboard are basic so any upgrade should start with a good motherboard.

i see no problem with prime. in fact for my next build i am very considering

i have a top motherboard. when i purchased it, was the most expensive MSI had to offer. .... never. not even once have i taken advantage of this mobo. no OC. nothing. its a regular mobo...so why give the extra money.

what you need is a slot where the CPU can fit...compatible wholes if you like. thats it. nothing more.

13700F could be fine as well, just 4 Atom cores less but if it's noticeable cheaper, it would be a better choice.

Gracemont cores, better than Skylake cores. So absolutely no bottom tiers Atom cores are used.....
