Howdy all!

I recently bit the bullet on a couple of upgrades for my PC, and would like some clear, no BS advice on doing a CPU upgrade, as this is my first time upgrading within the same Socket (in which case is AM4).

I'll be going from a Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D. And yes, my BIOS is updated to the latest one.

All I'll have to do is take out the 2600 and then drop in the 5700X3D, correct?
The reason for my asking is, I looked around the other night just to be sure, and found a post from a few years ago on either Reddit or LTT, the OP having asked a similar question; One commenter said to uninstall the old CPU Drivers (The things included with the AMD Chipset drivers) before the upgrade and re-install the latest.

However, this doesn't quite make sense to me, because as far as I'm aware, I'd still be utilizing the latest B450 Chipset Drivers (correct?), unless I'd be "filling in some gaps" so to speak regarding software components needed by the newer CPUs (3000 onwards) with a fresh install.

Thank you for your time, and for answering my questions!

Yep. Update the BIOS and swap CPUs. I would update the chipset drivers since you already have Windows Installed. No harm in doing it now instead of after the swap. It is probably already updated if you keep windows up to date.

I have both the latest Chipset Drivers and latest BIOS installed already, so I'm basically all set to go ahead with my upgrade.

Thank you for answering and providing me with a clear conscious!

If memory serves, swapping the CPU will reset all BIOS settings to default so you'll need to make any adjustments as if you'd just flashed the BIOS.

Also, you may need to reinstall the AMD chipset drivers. I needed to do that today after a BIOS flash to resolve an unknown PCI device in the Device Manager.

That's pretty much it. If you encounter any issues down the track, you can always do a fresh install. And by fresh I mean format the C drive then reinstall the windows.

Congratz on the upgrade!

Yes definitely reinstall windows I remember people having slower performance when popping in a faster cpu and it’s a windows issue still detecting it’s a 6-core when they have popped in an 8 core

And don't forget to clear CMOS or/and load optimized defaults in BIOS after upgrade.

I haven't had any or seen any issues that you're both describing.

I loaded Default Settings in BIOS prior to doing my Upgrade.

Whenever I install a major hardware change such as motherboard or cpu I without question reinstall windows.

But do whatever you want. It's your hardware. There are people out there who rip out everything in device manager to upgrade the motherboard or cpu.. I see no point in that due to the software/os issues that could arise when a simple reinstall is cleaner. But if you see no issues or do not understand what a lot of us are talking about, who cares. Have fun. Enjoy your new cpu.
