I have a Gigabyte B460M DS3H AC motherboard with an Intel Core i5-10400F CPU (TPM 2.0 built in). What confuses me is that the motherboard has a slot for a TPM module.

Is this because some supported CPUs lack TPM 2.0 or in anticipation of a TPM version beyond 2.0?

Some people may prefer a discrete TPM module over using firmware TPM for security reasons. If you remove the discrete TPM, the computer is effectively locked and any encrypted data within it can no longer be accessed, restoring access to it would be as simple as just plugging the discrete TPM back in again.

Some organizations require physical TPMs, since firmware TPMs lack certifications.
