Astron, the Dutch institute for radio astronomy, has commissioned a supercomputer with two hundred Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti cards. The cluster will search for flashes of light on images from the cameras of the Astron telescope.
The cluster with the video cards is located in Westerbork, where the dishes for the Astron radio telescope are also located. According to Joeri van Leeuwen, astronomer and principal investigator at Astron, this is the most powerful supercomputer in the Netherlands. "The cluster offers a computing power of 2 petaflops, which would bring you to spot 84 in the worldwide top500 of supercomputers." Currently, Cartesius 2 is the most powerful supercomputer in the Netherlands, with a peak strength of 1.3 petaflops
