Synology Inc. announced the official release of Virtual Machine Manager Pro to cater to professional users with services suitable to their needs. VMM Pro enables Synology NAS to run multiple virtual machines like Windows, Linux, Virtual DSM. It assists users to integrate and manage multiple Synology NAS via its virtualized cluster, flexibly distributes hardware resources, migrates virtual machines between hosts without any interruption, and conducts regular snapshots and replications to back up virtual machines, for the ultimate goal of building a efficient and safe virtualization environment.

Synology is dedicated to making powerful yet intuitive solutions for users. "Virtual Machine Manager has garnered wide acclaims with its latest version, and more than 130,000 Synology NAS have downloaded and installed it over the course of one year. This clearly shows how this product has been endorsed worldwide, which is very motivating to our development team. With the extremely flexible cluster in Virtual Machine Manager Pro, we are able to help IT personnel to easily build a professional and efficient virtualization environment on NAS servers. As this application improves your work efficiency, it protects critical virtual machines, as well." said Chen Feng Wang, Product Manager of virtualization at Synology.

The virtualized structure in the brand new VMM Pro significantly enhances work efficiency and the level of protection. Its thoughtfully designed cluster enables businesses to manage multiple NAS, manage working virtual machines that are scattered across different NAS on a single interface, and helps IT personnel to easily schedule data protection plans with snapshot and remote replication under the cluster. Aside from allowing users to complete virtual machine snapshots and replications in just seconds, VMM Pro comes with advanced features such as High Availability. High Availability alleviates service disruption issues and maximize the service uptime of your virtual machine with hassle-free setup. Every Synology NAS now comes with a 30-day free trial of VMM Pro, and Synology invites you to experience the advanced VMM features tailored for business.

Key features of Virtual Machine Manager Pro includes:

Cluster infrastructure
With VMM, you can create a cluster infrastructure with up to seven Synology NAS. VMM Pro enables migration and flexible scalability for load balancing and resource allocation.

Fully protect your virtual machines:
Snapshot features and protection plans provided by VMM enable you to clone and restore virtual machines within seconds. Rest assured that you can rollback any human error or hardware failure.

Live migration
No time delay should be tolerated, especially when it affects your business. VMM makes it possible to seamlessly migrate virtual machines from one Synology NAS to another. You can even store your data on a third machine. Say farewell to downtime that interrupts your business.

High Availability
Synology VMM HA provides a cost effective and easy method of service availability. In the event of server failure, affected virtual machines are automatically restarted on other NAS in the cluster providing these services.

And yet synology provided no way to backup your VM's to an external drive. The only way to backup your VM's is to shut them down manually and export them. This is not a viable solution for businesses.

Is Synology attempting to become a value option in comparison to VMWare? Do businesses run production machines on these things? I dislike paying VMWare licensing fees as much as I imagine anyone would, but their software works and works really well and is supported really well. Have had to reach out Synology support recently for an issue I had on a few of their NAS devices and their support leaves a lot to be desired.
