ThrottleStoping a 8550U: some questions

Hello! I've been trying my hand at using ThrottleStop to undervolt my i7, as I noted it heating up quite a lot these past couple of weeks. I read the guides, I trawled the forum posts, but there are quite a few things I still can't figure out. And so here I am, asking. I have a couple of specific questions, but, more generally, I guess what I'd like is for someone to take a look at my TS config and tell me what they think; if there's something that could be improved, something I may be doing wrong, something I'm not getting right, and so on.

  • When working normally (that is, when idling or working lightly), my Limit Reasons window will always show the EDP Other warning sign (yellow) on all three sections. Every now and then EDP Other (Core) might blink red for a split second. I'm not completely sure what these warnings are telling me. Seeing as they are, well, warnings, I suppose I should try to get rid of them, right? I've read somewhere that the PP0 Current Limit might have something to do with it, but tinkering with it a little gave me nothing.
  • When under stress (TS Bench, C23), EDP Other (Ring) and PL2 (Core) will turn red. I gather it's something to do with the Power Limit.

Goes without saying that I'm really new to using this tool, so apologies for any idiotic thing I might have done. I'll appreciate any feedback you could throw my way. Thanks in advance! 1.png2.png3.png4.png

@deaartio - Sometimes the EDP OTHER warning is hyper sensitive. Even if you clear it, it will quickly or immediately go back to a yellow warning. When lightly loaded, this does not matter. When heavily loaded, watch for any boxes in the CORE column turning red. That indicates throttling. Set the PP0 Current Limit to 256 and set all of the IccMax values to 255.75. Check to see if that stops EDP OTHER from lighting up.

Grab the new version of ThrottleStop.

If you are going to undervolt the Intel GPU, you also have to undervolt the iGPU Unslice equally. If you have an AMD or Nvidia GPU, the Intel GPU is usually not significantly loaded so most users do not bother with this. It might cause instability without it reducing power consumption any significant amount.

For the Core and Cache, these do not have to be set equally. Do some testing with Cinebench R20.

On the H series mobile CPUs, more users get better results when they set the core offset to a much bigger number compared to the cache offset. Not sure if this applies to your 8th Gen U CPU but it never hurts to do some testing. Cinebench R20 uses the AVX instructions which seems to benefit from requesting different voltages.

Not sure if it matters but I would set TDP Level to 0. There is usually no reason to check this option. If you do decide to check and use this, I think TDP Level 2 is the high TDP level. TDP Level 0 is the default level and TDP Level 1 is the low TDP level.

Turn the Log File option on in ThrottleStop and upload a log file here if you are having any problems. I you have good cooling, you might be able to run Cinebench without your computer overheating or power limit throttling.

Thanks for the reply! I'll get to it and test this out for some time. I'll come back if I have anything new to report. Thanks again for the help!
